An exciting opportunity to join a brand new service and partnership.
Emergency services are receiving increasing volumes of calls for individuals presenting with acute mental health issues in the community. A significant proportion of emergency services resource is being used to support individuals struggling with their mental health, who often present with complex issues that require further assessment and ongoing support.
The service will provide urgent triage of service users' mental health needs in the community, as an effective alternative to existing mental health crisis pathways available to emergency services.
Service users will be supported to access the right care at the right time by the right professional in the least restrictive way, reducing system pressures across emergency services, emergency departments and health-based places of safety.
Working in partnership will further form and strengthen working relationships between partner agencies and staff on the frontline, sharing experiences, education and insight into available local support resources for mutual service users.
Main duties of the job
The practitioner will be jointly responsible for:
- Information sharing within the service to enable informed decision-making and prioritisation of the Joint Response resource.
- Triage of service user's mental health needs.
- Biopsychosocial assessment of service user's mental health needs, where indicated.
- Assessment, formulation and management of presenting risks.
- Ensuring physical health care or treatment is accessed, if required, through support from NWAS (including via NWAS Hear and Treat advice line where appropriate).
- Assessment of mental capacity, where required.
- Timely completion of relevant documentation to evidence decision-making on scene.
- Signposting and onwards referrals for mental health and social support.
- Supporting their counterpart BTP officer in the decision-making where conveyance to ED/detention under s136 (as per MHA) deemed to be the most appropriate course of action.
- Education and informal training on scene, strengthening working relationships in partnership with emergency service colleagues.
- Provision of life support, where necessary and suitably trained.
- Maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Safeguarding vulnerable persons.
- Incident reporting, in line with existing Trust policies and procedures.

- Educated to degree level or equivalent demonstrable experience.
- Substantial experience as a senior mental health practitioner within the NHS
