Job summary

  • Assess and monitor patients, offering therapeutic dietary advice and education to a range of patients. The post will involve a service for Mental Health wards in Stockport and include other areas of dietetics including eating disorders or learning disability and enteral feeding.
  • Provide specialist nutritional and dietetic advice to medical, health care professionals and other agencies.
  • Contribute to the nutrition and dietetic service as a whole through participation in service development
  • Training for staff and patients to improve service delivery

Main duties of the job

Clinical responsibilities:

  • Act as an independent specialist practitioner and be professionally and legally accountable and responsible for all aspects of own work, including a clinical caseload.
  • Main areas of work - Mental Health wards in Stockport (adult, high support, older people and rehabilitation) and either support for Oldham Learning Disability or Child Adolescent Mental Health Services in Tameside.
  • Work independently to undertake nutritional assessments and calculate nutritional requirements of patients using anthropometry and taking into account medical, social and cultural factors.
  • Communicate evidence based nutritional and dietary advice in an understandable form.
  • Use well developed communication and counselling skills such as reflective listening, open questioning, empathy, explanation and reassurance to communicate dietary intervention to patients and carers.
  • Gain valid consent to treatment and negotiate change with patients by breaking down barriers, using motivational skills, to enable them to achieve dietary targets set.
  • To work with other health professionals in a multidisciplinary way to support patient care.

  • HCPC registration
  • Evidence of CPD training to diploma level in relevant area or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • Member of the British Dietetic Association

  • Accredited BDA course in mental health / learning disabilities

  • Post registration Master's degree in relevant specialism
