Main duties of the job

  • The Dispensary Manager is responsible for the management and day-to-day operation of the dispensary service and medicines management service from Cavell Centre.
  • The Dispensary Manager is expected to take an active lead in aspects of service development within these areas and be able to resolve problems that may arise within these parts of the pharmacy service.
  • In conjunction with clinical medicines management technicians within the team, the Dispensary Manager provides a comprehensive specialist mental health clinical medicines management technician service to the wards and teams within Peterborough and North Cambridgeshire.
  • To be responsible for the provision of the day-to-day clinical medicines management technician service on the unit.
  • To promote and monitor compliance with medicines legislation and quality standards.
  • To recognise and reduce risks associated with medicine use.
  • To promote cost effective and appropriate use of medicines.
  • To contribute to the provision of the pharmacy service to other aspects of health services in the Trust when required.
  • To support Trust pharmacy dispensary services if required.
  • To take a lead on or contribute to service development within the pharmacy department and the clinical medicines management service on the unit, and where appropriate in other settings within the Trust.

  1. Be accountable for developing and maintaining the day-to-day specialist pharmacy technician services provided to the Cavell Centre Hospital, Trafford Ward and Intermediate Care Centre if needed in line with medicines policies and standard operating procedures.
  2. Support the pharmacist in the provision of the clinical pharmacy service and recognise when clinical queries need to be referred to a different healthcare professional (e.g. pharmacist, doctor).
  3. To co-ordinate the operational work of all the dispensary and clozapine service activities, that take place within the dispensary - prioritising and directing as required to ensure optimum use of staff time in the dispensary.
  4. To liaise with the specialist pharmacy technicians to ensure the smooth running of the clozapine service including participation in near-patient blood testing, dispensing of the medication supplies, organising supply and delivery schedules and monitoring of blood tests.
  5. To identify the need for, prepare, and revise Standard Operating Procedures and other policy documentation relating to the dispensary and clozapine service to ensure working practices comply with medicines legislation and quality standards.
  6. To propose, develop and implement policies and procedures for the dispensary and medicines management services to for the benefit of pharmacy staff, ward/team staff, service users and carers. To plan the implementation of changes in the policies and manage the change appropriately.
  7. To participate in Trust-wide medicines management initiatives.
  8. To supervise the pharmacy technicians and support worker staff and carry appraisals and 1:1.
  9. Develop and contribute to education and training about medicines management to pharmacy technicians, nursing staff and other healthcare professionals.
  10. Plan, arrange and carry out 3 monthly Controlled Drug checks on the ward and provide feedback to ward manager as necessary.
  11. Act as a witness for the destruction of Patients own and Schedule 4 Part 1 Controlled Drugs that are no longer required.
  12. To Report medication errors/ incidents using the Trust incident reporting scheme (Datix) and investigate pharmacy errors

The responsibilities of this post require the post-holder to work autonomously as well as a team member. This role may require travel to other locations within the Trust.
