Job summary
This is a 10 PA substantive post in community adult psychiatry based in Peterborough with the Peterborough Adult Locality team (PALT) and the primary care mental health service (PCMH). The post is based in Peterborough City centre (Town hall) with opportunities to work remotely during the week. You will work with 4 other PALT consultant psychiatrists , each with responsibility for a geographical patch covering approx. 6- 8 GP practices.
You will be working closely with a small team of senior clinicians who will manage the flow of patients from practices between primary and secondary care. You and your team will provide assessment and treatment for all patients in your area. You will work within the Locality team, which is itself sectorised, to manage the most severely unwell patients in your sector but you will also be aligned to staff from the Primary Care Mental Health Service who will support and assess patients in primary care from your key practices and step patients up into the team when needed
There will be opportunities to take on management responsibilities both internally within the Trust as well as externally with the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Mentoring will also be provided to help new Consultants settle into their roles.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide clinical leadership to the team. He or she will contribute to assessment of patients referred to the service for diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders and support MDT members who carry out assessment of patients both within the team and in primary care.
The post holder will help to facilitate accurate diagnosis and timely interventions so that treatment can be delivered in a timely manner and in accordance with the recovery model.
He or she will also provide ongoing treatments to patients that are evidence based and supported by NICE guidelines maintaining a bio psychosocial approach.

The post holder will:
- Work in accordance with the New Ways of Working initiative for Consultants, attend regular team meetings such as MDT meetings and formulation meetings to discuss clinical issues with team members, care coordinators, inpatient doctors and other statutory agencies as required for the care of community patients
- Work closely with Consultant colleagues to ensure that the patient journey is as smooth as possible
- Give clinical leadership and actively liaise with general practitioners, psychiatrists and other hospital specialists, statutory and non-statutory agencies, whenever relevant to the care and treatment of patients

- Use evidence-based interventions at all times
- Offer a consistent response to referrers/service users in a timely fashion regardless of origin of referral
- Offer an accurate diagnosis and timely interventions so that intensive treatment can be delivered to prevent chronicity and dependency on psychiatric services, in accordance with the recovery model
- Attend Mental Health Act assessments for relevant patients as indicated
- Act as the Responsible Clinician for inpatients including attending Tribunals, as necessary
- Participate in the development and maintenance of care programmes for patients
- Supervise junior and middle grade doctors in the team
- Participate in the teaching programmes of the multidisciplinary team
- Contribute to the collection of clinical information to ensure further service development and to enable audit
- Work closely with Consultant colleagues to contribute to the provision of appropriate Consultant cover for daytime, 9 am to 5 pm, (working days) and for periods of annual/study/special leave
