Specialist Pharmacy Technician - Lead for Education and Training

Job summary

We are seeking an experienced GPhC registered pharmacy technician to be our subject matter lead in Education and Training to support the development of pharmacy staff across the Trust. This will include the management of students, and contribution to the support of all pharmacy trainees.

The post holder will also contribute to direct patient care at out-patient clinics (including within our clozapine clinics) and have a role in helping to learn from incidents relating to medicines across the organisation.

We need someone with skills and enthusiasm in the training of staff and is confident in producing and delivering training. The successful candidate will be well organised, comfortable with taking responsibility for independent decision making in their field of expertise, and adaptable to the varying requirements of the role at different times.

This role is mostly based at Fulbourn Hospital, Cambridge, but there is a requirement on the post-holder to be able to flexibly operate in various clinical sites across the county (e.g. Newtown Centre, Huntingdon and Cavell Centre, Peterborough) to be able to achieve the duties of the job.

Main duties of the job

To lead and develop education and training of pharmacy team members within CPFT. The post holder will use their developed expertise to support staff to develop in their roles, and to co-ordinate planned training programmes for trainees. This will include the management and supervision of pharmacy technician trainees. The post holder will be expected to be a subject matter expert and will be expected to help the team to develop and maintain systems that support the education and training of staff.

The role will also include regular day-to-day clinical activity. This will include supporting outpatient mental health services - by providing pharmacy oversight at clozapine clinics and out-patient team bases, and inpatient mental health services alongside pharmacy colleagues.

The role will also include contribution to work for Trust medication safety reviews. The post holder will work with the Medication Safety Officer to review medicine incidents reported in the Trust and support the writing of reports in relation to these incidents.

To act as a subject matter expert for the Trusts pharmacy team on Education and Training matters for all team members. To provide managerial oversight of pharmacy technician trainees and provide co-ordination of pre- and post-registration training programmes.

To act as supervisor, and/or provide support and co-ordination of other supervisors) for pharmacy technicians undertaking post-registration training programmes (e.g., Certificate of Medicines Management for Pharmacy Technicians, medicines management accreditation programmes).

To represent the CPFT Pharmacy team at local, regional and national education and training forums when appropriate.

To co-ordinate the development of training packages to be used within the department to benefit service delivery by pharmacy staff and other medicines management training materials for others in the Trust.

To monitor and support completion of mandatory training ad supervision/appraisal by pharmacy staff.

To support with the securing of funding and places for education and training courses/programmes/events in conjunction with the Trust Education and Training team.

To participate in the pharmacy technician-led trust wide outpatient medicine supply processes and associated logistic processes. This includes working at local clozapine clinics on average twice a week, and ordering depot medications to trust mental health teams via both homecare and trust dispensaries. Clinic work will be across Trust sites and will involve handling and testing blood samples on Near Patient Testing machines (NPT) at clinic bases and at pharmacy bases.

Discuss with patients their medication histories, treatment changes and side effect issues. Give advice and where appropriate refer to other health care professional.

Liaise with service users, nurses, doctors, and others to ensure correct and timely supply of medication and monitoring for patients. To offer advice to ward/clinic staff on the safe storage of medicines.

To provide a medicines management technician role to mental health wards across mental health sites as and when required. Routinely this will be a limited amount on a weekly basis, but with potential need to cover short-term additional requirements on an ad-hoc basis.

To participate in the dispensing and final checking of medication passing through CPFT pharmacies as part of a rota schedule. To ensure checking accreditation is maintained at all times.

To contribute to work for Trust medication safety reviews. The post holder would work with the Medication Safety Officer to review medicine incidents reported in the Trust and support the writing of reports in relation to these incidents and to support learning from medication incidents.
