Job summary

George Mackenzie House is a low secure unitprovidingRecovery focused care for male and female adults experiencing difficulties associated with a range of acute often long-standing mental health illness's.

The MDT assess and review all aspects of patient care seeking to use a holistic, collaborative approach inthe preparation of individual care-plans where each patient is central to this process.

We believe in truly collaborative care, support and positive risk taking. Working on GMH will give the post holder the opportunity to practice a full range of core psychology skills and to gain experience in risk assessment, management and recovery focused interventions.

Main duties of the job

Work on 1:1 basis or within groups providing clinical psychology, counselling, psychology or psychological therapy service.

Offer advice on patient's psychological care.

Provide supervision, guidance to junior staff .

Contribute to a programme of training/development for all staff Ensure accurate record keeping including the production of reports, treatment summaries & assessment tools used within the service e.g. HCR20.

Work with clinicians to provide information & data to the team.

Work within professional guidelines & exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice

Attend meetings, liaising with the professional lead, supervisor and team manager on service development.

Suggest, implement policy changes with psychological therapies & the mental health service.

Utilize research skills for audit, policy and service development & the mental health service & to disseminate this information widely.

The post holder will work with supervisors and colleagues within George Mackenzie House Low secure unit to ensure that:

Clinical interventions are implemented in line with evidence-based practiceincluding the latest NICE guidelines.

Procedures are in place for operation of the services.

Clinical governance arrangements are in place to cover all of the clinical activity.

Staffs are appropriately skilled and trained to deliver the service and to provide supervision.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the clinical activity of the service.

This will involve holding a clinical caseload.

Contribute to the gatekeeping, assessment of referrals via agreed protocols within the service.

Provide psychological therapy interventions for cases referred to the team.

This will involve the use of evidence based psychological interventions in both individual and group work formats e.g. CBT.

Formulate, implement and evaluate therapy programmes for clients.

Adhere to all clinical and policies and procedures.

Maintain high clinical standards in all aspects of the work.

Provide clinical supervision in the service.

To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management in line with Trust and inter-agency policies and procedures, including work with clients deemed as vulnerable.

To take special responsibility for the assessment of risk in relation to thepresentation of clients with complex psychological needs, enabling other members of the service to assign them to the appropriate place on the care pathway.

To communicate, in a highly skilled and sensitive manner, to clients, family carers and others as appropriate, information that may be contentious or highly distressing concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients under their care.

To produce reports on clients in a timely manner, that convey the key findings of psychological assessment and formulation and treatment outcome in a way that does justice to the complexity of the problems described, but that are understandable to the recipients of the reports, including clients and referrers.

To work in partnership with other disciplines and to maintain links with statutory and non-statutory agencies as appropriate.

To attend multidisciplinary meetings relating to patient clinical reviews where appropriate.

To contribute to a programme of training and development for all staff within George Mackenzie House teams to improve skills in working with common mental health conditions.

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS, or a BPS Statement of Equivalence.

Desirable

  • Chartered Clinical Psychologist
  • Undertaken post-doctoral training in one or more relevant additional specialised areas of psychological practice.
  • Further specialist training in understanding Personality Disorders.
  • Other relevant academic qualifications to masters or Doctoral level.

Experience

  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, and in-patient settings.
