The permanent posts are eligible for a £3000 New Hire Bonus. An initial payment of £1000 will be paid in the first 1 month and a final payment of £2000 will be paid 1 year after your start date. Please see attached New Hire Bonus Terms & Conditions.

Unique Band 5 career development post offering accredited training to support career progression. The position is open to Mental Health Nurses, along with LD, Paediatric and General Nursing staff. This position would also be ideal for recently qualified staff looking to take the next step in their career.

The Phoenix Centre in collaboration with Addenbrookes, are currently exploring new and innovative research projects to enable us to gain a greater understanding of the complexities of Eating Disorders. This post offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in research whilst also developing core mental health nursing skills, in addition to the highly specialized skills needed to treat young people with Eating Disorders.

Main duties of the job

Examples of possible training modules, depending on experience and interest, might include:

  • Introduction to research, what is research, steps of undertaking research, clinical research, translational research, interventional and observational research.
  • Quantitative and qualitative research, research nurse versus nurse researcher.
  • Understanding Clinical Trials
  • Important documents in clinical research (1): Research protocol, (2): Patient Information Sheet for Clinical Research Studies (3): Informed Consent Form
  • Research Ethics and Governance
  • Intro to Public & Patient Involvement (PPI) in Clinical Research
  • The roles & responsibilities in the study team
  • HRA and Research ethics application (intro to IRAS)
  • Data quality, Case Report Forms and the role of the trials monitor
  • Safety reporting, AEs, SAEs, SUSARs

In addition, candidates will be trained to use specific equipment, necessary for the proposed research project. There will also be the opportunity to join ongoing psychological research projects at The Phoenix Centre, supported by our Senior Psychologist and Research Assistant.

The Phoenix Centre is one of the very few remaining NHS units in the country that treats young people between the ages of 12-18, with Anorexia Nervosa and Eating Disorders. Sadly, the diagnosis can be associated with high levels of co-morbidity, such as Depression, OCD, Social Phobia, Anxiety Disorders, Emotional Instability and sometimes Psychosis. This in combination with the complex family dynamics that can co-exist with the illness means that staff who join us are able to develop strong generic psychiatric skills in the management of multiple diagnoses, alongside highly specialised skills that can only really be learnt on a unit such as The Phoenix.

Alongside the research role, the successful candidate will be trained to deliver Individual Keyworker Sessions, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and Sensory Approaches. There is also the opportunity to attend a 2-day Introduction to Cognitive Analytical Therapy (CAT); as we hold biweekly Case Discussions, externally supervised by the current Chair of The Association of Cognitive Analytical Therapy; in which we use the principles of CAT, to formulate cases and provide a reflective thinking space. Our Nurses are also welcomed to join Family Therapy Sessions and our Multidisciplinary Therapeutic Assessment in the first week of admission.

Although your base will be at the Phoenix Centre, there are significant opportunities for personal development, on our sister units: the Darwin Centre for Young People, a general adolescent inpatient unit and The Croft, our younger childrens inpatient service. It is an expectation and desire that nursing staff will undertake personal competency development on all our units to meet skill development and service delivery needs. The appointment will be to the Tier 4 Childrens Inpatient Services within CPFT. The Trust operates a rotational shift pattern that includes weekend working when required by the unit/Trust. Although infrequent, you may be asked to undertake individual shifts on other units to meet the needs of the service and fulfil the Trusts duty of care to all its patients.
