Job summary

This appointment has been developed to support high quality teaching of undergraduate medical students at Cambridge and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust. It is suitable for a doctor who has completed at least 18 months of Psychiatry training and who wishes to gain further experience in undergraduate teaching. Any applicants must have a GMC Status with a License to Practice.

Main duties of the job

This appointment has been developed to support high quality teaching ofundergraduate medical students at Cambridge and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust. It is suitable for a doctor who has completed at least 18 months of Psychiatry training and who wishes to gain further experience in undergraduate teaching.

Possession of MRCPsych is desirable.

It is a fixed term appointment of up to 12 months.

Candidates who possess a National Training Number should liaise with their Deanery to seek approval for a teaching post (OOPT). We will endeavour to include up to a third WTE (2 to 3 sessions) in their chosen speciality.

Job responsibilities

Undergraduate Psychiatry Teaching in CPFT

CPFT is a major provider of undergraduate and postgraduate educational andtraining. The Trust provides undergraduate psychiatry placements for around148 students per year. Students placed within CPFT in year 5 are offered a broad range of learning experiences. Year 5 students usually have experience in all three age groups (child/adolescent, adult and old age) and all three main clinical settings (inpatient, community and liaison). Some also get opportunities in morespecialist services. Students interested in psychiatry can get further experienceof psychiatry (clinical and/or research) in student selected components.Students in year 6 get liaison psychiatry tutorials during medical/surgicalplacements, to help them to apply the psychiatry they have learnt to generalhospital inpatients. We provide a wide range of electronic learning resources(including videos and podcasts) as well as more traditional face-face teaching.Assessment is through assessed case presentations, MCQ exams and OSCEs.Psychiatrists are also involved more widely in the clinical school course, includingcommunication skills teaching (the award-winning Cambridge-Calgary model),the professionalism course, curriculum development and quality control.

Opportunities of the postWe expect the post holder to take part both in delivering existing teachingprogrammes and developing/improving teaching. There is a wide variety ofteaching/teaching development opportunities available. The fellow will meetwith their supervisor regularly during their post to discuss what teaching/developments they should be part of, to meet their learning needs andskills. These may include (but are not limited to): Teach year 5 placement students in psychiatry (bedside teachingprogramme) Teach and develop the year 6 Psychiatry programme (Liaison tutorials andwork book) Deliver face-face lectures Small group communications skills and professionalism teaching Develop the online learning resources Liaise with the GP education group in improving psychiatry teaching in GPsettings Develop and lead delivery of novel (or not so novel) SSCs in psychiatry Take part in clinical school examinations (MCQ writing and standardsetting) Take on the role of clinical supervisor for undergraduates Conducting research in medical education Attendance at clinical school deanery meetings, local educationcommittees and quality assurance visits to the regional hospitals by theClinical School.In addition, it is anticipated that the appointee will undertake training in medicaleducation, for example by registering to complete a Postgraduate Certificate ofMedical Education or enrol and complete the IFME Programme. The applicantwill receive a financial contribution to access the course if they are unable toobtain a bursary through the local scheme.
