Job summary

Applications are invited for a full-time Consultant in Upper Gastrointestinal Medicine and interventional endoscopy to start in 2025. The post is based within the gastrointestinal services division at University College Hospital which is one of the largest in the UK

Main duties of the job

The post holder is expected to have broad experience of upper GI disorders. Experience in EUS would be desirable and in particular therapeutic upper GI therapeutic endoscopy and upper GI cancer management. They will be expected to contribute to the further service development and clinical research in these areas. The post will include consultant-led UGI endoscopy sessions, outpatient clinics and ward based responsibilities. Contribution to the academic and research activity of the group will be expected. The post holder will be incorporated into the gastroenterology on-call rota at UCLH. Applicants will be expected to have excellent communication skills and experience in postgraduate teaching and training.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration On GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of attainment of CCST in gastroenterology and GIM Part II MRCP or equivalent.
  • Higher degree MD/MS or PhD (or in final stages of equivalent level of attainment in research publications).
  • Widespread broad based knowledge in all aspects of gastroenterology
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance framework of NHS (inc research governance).
  • Understanding of current changes in the management and organisational structures of the NHS. Ability to work within these parameters.
  • Knowledge and understanding of principles of resource and budgetary management.

Desirable

  • Particular knowledge of the management of pre, early and late UGI cancer.

Experience

Essential

  • Training in Gastroenterology
  • Clinical audit experience
  • Experience of and interest in teaching at undergraduate and post graduate levels

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Fully competent and JAG accredited in upper and lower GI endoscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic)
  • Endoscopic ultrasound
  • Proven ability to teach in clinical settings

Desirable

  • Advanced Endoscopic therapeutic techniques such as endoscopic resection, ablative therapy, third space endoscopy
  • Proven ability to carry out high quality original research leading to publication in peer reviewed publications
