Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and hardworking surgeon to join our highly dedicated and award-winning Head & Neck (H&N) MDT team.

This will be a substantive position for a full time Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) with an interest in Head & Neck (H&N) Surgical Oncology. This is a pivotal role within a fast-paced department.

The post holder will have a commitment to high quality patient care, innovative service models, delivery of performance targets, and excellence in education/training and clinical research and audit. The successful candidate will have a primary interest in OMFS Head & Neck Surgery and will be expected to play a key role in the continuation of developing a world class Head & Neck centre at UCLH.

Main duties of the job

This is a full time post (10 PAs) which entails major input into the care of OMFS Head & Neck patients across UCLH. A detailed job plan including personal and professional objectives will be agreed once in post, involving elective theatre and outpatient sessions.

Our unit offers services in Head & Neck, ENT and OMFS Surgery. UCLH offers specialist services providing treatment for benign and malignant conditions of the Head & Neck region. The service sees around 3,000 new patients per year, 350 non-elective cases and approximately 450 new Head & Neck cancers per year across our network sites. This provides excellent opportunities for research and audit.

The postholder will be expected to play a key role in providing exemplary patient care at UCLH as part of the NEL/NCL Head & Neck Surgical Elective Hub. The role is included in a 1:7 on-call rota which includes weekend / out of hours.

Essential

  • Eligible for full GMC Registration
  • On GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of attainment of CCT at date of interview
  • Intercollegiate FRCS (OMFS) MBBS and BDS [or equivalent]

Desirable

  • A higher degree, e.g. MD/PhD
  • Fellowship in OMFS Head and Neck Surgery, Minimal access surgery, reconstructive surgery

Experience

Essential

  • A full grounding in the assessment and surgical treatment of patients presenting with problems in the Head and Neck area particularly cancer

Desirable

  • Experience in plastic surgery/ENT/neurosurgery is desirable.

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Experience in the surgical treatment for Head and Neck cancer together with an understanding of the non-surgical treatments and supportive and palliative care.
  • Formal training in Head and Neck surgery with a secure knowledge of the non-surgical treatment of Head and Neck cancer.
