Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to be part of our team of the medical examiners and would like to invite applications from consultants to join our Medical Examiner service.

From 9th September 2024, it will be a legal requirement for all deaths in any healthcare setting not investigated by a coroner to be reviewed by the medical examiner. The Medical Examiner system offers independent scrutiny of deaths, gives bereaved people a voice, and provides them with support.

Medical examiners are accountable to medical directors within trusts but also have a separate professional line of accountability to the lead medical examiner and national/regional medical examiners.At present, the service is reviewing all deaths at UCLH, Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), Moorfields Eye Hospital, Camden community, and soon The Royal Marsden Hospital. We have established working relationships with local GPs, care homes, and registrars. We are looking to fill sessions (1xPA) on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

Main duties of the job

o Review medical records & supporting diagnostic information.o Improve quality of death certificationo Discuss cause of death with next of kin / informant and provide an opportunity share any feedback about the care.o Identify and share any learning.

Candidates must have successfully completed the mandatory e-learning modules online (free of charge) and attend a face-to-face training session at the Royal College of Pathologists, London, paid for by the Trust, within the first three months in post.

Knowledge, Skills and Performance

Essential

  • Medical practitioner registered and licensed to practise in the UK by the GMC.
  • Candidates must have successfully completed the mandatory e-learning modules by the time they start the role. Candidates must attend a face-to-face training session within the first three months in post.
  • MEs should have up-to-date knowledge of causes of death and an understanding of the legal frameworks associated with death certification processes.
  • IT skills including use of email and commonly used software.
  • Knowledge of the special requirements of various faith groups and respect for equality and diversity

  • Knowledge of local and national clinical governance systems and an understanding of how the ME can work collaboratively to improve patient safety by identifying sub-optimal clinical and organisational performance.
