Job summary

The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), Queen Square, is the UK's largest dedicated neurological and neurosurgical hospital. It provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for the diagnosis, treatment and care of all conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nervous system and muscles.

The Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology provides a multidisciplinary service to all departments in the hospital for inpatient and outpatient consultations as well as running its own outpatient service. Care is provided to patients with orbital or neurological disease affecting the visual or ocular motor systems Fundus imaging, OCT, orthoptics, and automated perimetry are available in the department.

NHNN sits within University College London NHS Trust, and there are close links on-site with University College London Institute of Neurology and Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in Neuro-Ophthalmology, for an Ophthalmologist [ST7+], commencing August 2024 for a period of 6 months. This is a 0.7 whole time equivalent post, working Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. There is no out of hours or on-call commitment with this post.

The post represents an opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic doctor to join a dynamic clinical team which will support their acquisition of expertise in the assessment and management of a wide range of neuro-ophthalmic conditions including papilloedema and raised intracranial pressure, neurological causes of visual failure, ocular motility abnormalities and facial hyperkinetic syndromes. Targeted training is offered to fulfil relevant requirements of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists curriculum in Ophthalmic Specialty Training, and in preparation for post-graduate clinical exams as required. The post is recognised by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for Trainee Selected Component (TSC) experience in Neuro-Ophthalmology. Training in RCOphth curricular requirements of general ophthalmology and cataract surgery for pre-CCT post-holders is available.

The National Hospital is an important research institution, and the post-holder will be expected to contribute to the research, audit, teaching and training within the department. The post-holder will also be encouraged to attend post-graduate teaching activities as the timetable permits.
