In the Centre for Neuromuscular Disease at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery we see some of the most diagnostically challenging and complex cases in neurology in the UK. The Inflammatory Peripheral Nerve Service has developed a reputation for reviewing, diagnosing and treating primary inflammatory nerve diseases, and those associated with haematological and other malignant diseases.We require a Consultant Neurologist to fulfil a 0.5WTE Consultant Neurologist Role dedicated to supporting the Inflammatory Peripheral Nerve Service. You will have the opportunity to participate the most excellent care of the complete range of cases seen in the Department, leading pathways of management both within UCLH and often at linked or more distant linked hospitals. We are a close-knit, sociable and academic department and the successful candidate will be a team-player contributing to the smooth running of the department.You will see patients referred to the Centre, for diagnosis and management of their disease in out-patients. You will be required to take part in, and contribute to, multidisciplinary meetings relating to investigation and care of patients in the department both as in- and out-patients. You will singly or jointly lead ward rounds of in-patients under our care and participate in the teaching and education of Junior Doctors, Clinical Fellows and undergraduate students at the bedside and in teaching sessions.
Main duties of the job
The department has a very strong clinical research ethos and you will be encouraged to develop a research interest contributing to the care of Inflammatory Peripheral Nerve Disease patients. Specialist skills from past neuromuscular experience and academic endeavour that contribute to the breadth and depth of departmental scope will be encouraged.
The main duties of the 0.5WTE role are as follows:
o Run X2 out-patient clinics (F2F) per weeko Attend and participate in a weekly MDT/'book round' to discuss patient managemento Attend and participate in neuromuscular histopathology and imaging MDTso Participate in the consultant ward referral rota (1 in 3)o Participate in the unit audit projects, supporting other members of the MDT to perform audit, and represent the unit intermittently at the trust Clinical Audit Quality Improvement and Safety Committee (CAQISC)o Support the training of undergraduates and UK or overseas clinical fellows attached to the unito Support the unit's research activity - including inpatient or day-ward review of patients attending for clinical trialso Support the team in expanding specialist services and clinicso Maintain broad clinical expertise by attendance at Gower's Round and internal and external CME teaching meetings
At all times you will maintain an excellent standard of care commensurate with the Centre of Clinical Excellence designation of the department from MDUK and GBSCIDP-FI.
