Job summary

A GP with Specialist Interest in Palliative Care is required to be part of the Enhanced Supportive care Team at University College Hospital, 3 sessions (1 and a half days/ 12 hours) per week as soon as possible. This post is a fixed-term appointment for one year to cover maternity leave. Our service is expanding over the next few months and this is an exciting time to join a dynamic, welcoming and patient-centred team.

The post-holder is based in outpatients and will be part of the Enhanced Supportive Care team which works with primary care, allied health professionals and oncology teams to prevent and manage the adverse effects of cancer and its treatment. Enhanced Supportive Care aims to improve the quality of life of those living with advanced cancer and the team works closely with the Palliative Care Team. The post is a Trust post and is not recognised for training at middle grade level.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will have a key role in working clinically with oncology multidisciplinary teams - medical staff and site-specific Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) - and other nursing and Allied Health Professionals within the Macmillan Cancer Centre.

The post-holder will proactively recognise patients with advanced cancer who have unmet symptom and psychological needs, clinically review them and work with them to optimise their symptom control and plan for their future.

The postholder will work closely with other members of the team (Lead Consultant, Band 8A CNS, Band 7 CNS and 1 other part time GPwSI). S/he will also create and maintain good links with primary care - General Practice, Community Palliative Care Teams, community nursing etc - to optimise communication and integration, and to facilitate care in the community setting.

As a team we collect patient reported outcomes as well as a variety of other data to assess and demonstrate the effects of the service.
