Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to develop a multi-centre radiotherapy clinical trial in retroperitoneal sarcoma with Princess Margaret Hospital Toronto, and Dana Faber Cancer Institute.

UCLH Is one of the largest sarcoma centres in Europe and delivers technical radiotherapy using photons and protons.

Main duties of the job

  • Reviewing the outcomes of patients that have already been treated with definitive radiotherapy at UCLH
  • Replanning these patients with protons as well as differing dose fractionations in preparation for the clinical trial protocol
  • Preparation and presentation of the clinical trial concept at National and International meetings
  • Writing the clinical trial protocol
  • Working with academic staff from UCL to work up the translational aspects of the clinical trial.
  • Working with the to be appointed Margaret Spittle Fellow to develop functional imaging techniques to asses response to radiotherapy.
  • No sarcoma clinical commitments

The Grafton Way Building opened in 2021, and comprises Proton Beam Therapy, Imaging, Theatres, ITU and Haematology Inpatient Service. UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre opened in April 2012 on the site of the old EGA building on Huntley Street. The building houses HCA, The Squire Garden, Haematology/Oncology daycare, outpatients, theatres, imaging, nuclear medicine and phlebotomy. Volunteers work throughout the Cancer Centre to help provide outstanding practical, emotional and financial support to patients, their carers and loved ones. The Macmillan Support and Information Service provides a range of support and information to all patients seen and treated in the Cancer Centre, and to any other patient with cancer treated elsewhere within the Trust. The PET/MR Unit operates the UKs first PET/MR system, which includes both a PET camera and 3T MR scanner in the same physical unit so that both tests can be performed simultaneously in one single session.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

  • Medical degree
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
  • GMC registration and entry on the appropriate GMC Specialist Register
  • Completed core medial training or equivalent

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the Clinical Governance framework of the NHS (including Research governance) and understanding of current changes in the organisation and management structures of the NHS. Ability to act within these parameters

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in clinical oncology
  • Experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Clinical audit experience

Desirable

  • Undergoing or completed higher specialist training in clinical oncology
  • Experience of laboratory research
