We are delighted to be advertising a substantive post for a Consultant Radiologist at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in Paediatric Imaging.
UCLH functions as both a general and specialist centre for neonatal, paediatric, teenage and young adult patients.
The general workload encompasses a large volume of general inpatient and outpatient examinations, across all body systems outside the CNS, in children of all ages. The role will include supervision of Clinical Radiology Specialist Trainees in both core and specialist training, as well as several departmental Sonographers performing general paediatric ultrasound and neonatal hip screening.
The specialist workload enjoys a close relationship with other specialist centres in London including Great Ormond Street Hospital, The Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals and The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.
Applicants should have level 2 subspecialty experience in Paediatric Radiology, with expertise in all aspects of body imaging for children from birth through to their transition into adult services.
Applicants should possess the FRCR or equivalent and be on the specialist register or within 6 months of obtaining their CCT.

Main duties of the job
The Paediatric Haematology and Oncology services are amongst the largest in the country, receiving referrals and specialist opinion requests from across the UK, as well as conducting national and international research trials. Many patients are treated across both the UCLH and Great Ormond Street Hospital sites.
The UCLH Proton Beam Therapy service is one of two in the UK and provides therapy for a broad range of paediatric oncological pathologies. Specifically, Paediatric Radiology provide case-review, therapy planning and MDT support for children with Lymphoma, Wilms Tumours, Neuroblastoma and Rhabdomyosarcoma. The post holder will therefore have specialist experience in paediatric oncology reporting and will be expected to contribute to the ongoing MRI sequence optimisation for PBT treatment planning.
The UCLH Neonatal Unit (NNU) is a tertiary service for North Central London (NCL) providing care for complex and extreme preterm neonates. It is a hypothermic treatment centre for hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy, and provides immediate postnatal support for complex obstetric cases, as well as neonates requiring immediate postnatal cardiac and general surgery.

The NNU is the NCL hub for bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and the post holder will have, or will gain, experience in supervising and interpreting neonatal CT thorax examinations to support the service. Along with the other members of the Paediatric Radiology team, the post holder will be expected to provide radiograph reporting, portable ultrasound and fluoroscopy support for the NNU.
The tertiary level UCLH Fetal Medicine Unit (FMU) is an internationally renowned centre for research, as well as a national referral centre for prenatal intervention, surgery and intrapartum treatment. The FMU is supported by an expanding Fetal MRI service which provides complex imaging for prenatal counselling, prenatal surgical assessment, and intrapartum treatment planning.
The Fetal MRI reporting is shared between Fetal Neuroradiology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) and Paediatric Radiology at UCLH. The post holder will therefore have experience in supervising and interpreting Fetal MRI examinations. A joint venture with the Great Ormond Street Hospital Cardiology Department is planned for 2024. This includes establishing a clinical Fetal Cardiac MRI service at UCLH, and research links via the UCL Childrens Cardiovascular Disease Research Group.
Finally, the post holder will be expected to contribute to the general running of the radiology department via support for the specialist trainee-led acute radiology service and general radiology on call rota.
An interest in service development, particularly within MRI sequence and protocol development would be an advantage for this role. Many complex cross-sectional examinations are conducted for children at UCLH, including under general anaesthetic and with the support of our team of Play-specialists.
Furthermore, the development a video fluoroscopy service for the paediatric oncology and neonatal Speech and Language Therapy team is envisaged for the near future.
The successful candidate will join a close team of Paediatric Radiologists at UCLH. Dr Trevor Gaunt works fulltime at UCLH, and Dr Paul Humphries works cross-site between UCLH and GOSH. Dr Kelly Barateau provides Neuroradiology support for NNU and FMU from NNUH, and Dr Kish Mankad provides specialist Paediatric Neuroradiology support from GOSH.
Consultant Radiologists at UCLH enjoy an excellent work/life balance and each are provided with a diagnostic workstation for home reporting. Weekday out-of-hours Consultant cover is provided by the inhouse acute team Consultant until 7 pm and outsourced thereafter. There is a weekend on call for general radiology, with an approximate 1:25 (two weekends per year), and time off in lieu granted if undertaken on site.
