Job summary

UCLH is seeking to appoint two full-time Colorectal and General Surgery Consultants, one as a substantive post and one as a 12-month locum position. The post-holders will be part of the GI Surgery department, within the Gastrointestinal Services Division, and will specialise in either complex pelvic cancer surgery or IBD surgery.The post-holders will also need to develop specific sub-speciality skills to support aligned Gynaecology and Urology services.

The post-holders will be responsible for ensuring that activities undertaken within the Colorectal and General Surgery Service are subject to robust governance arrangements that follow best practice. Patient safety, quality of care and clinical outcomes are expected to be at the centre of all aspects of clinical care.

The post-holders will work closely with the Colorectal and General Surgery team, with some joint operating and clinics, supporting data gathering and analysis to support local and national audits. The post holders, together with consultant colleagues will be responsible for the supervision and teaching of the trainees and to assist in preparing them for post- graduate examinations. Independent laparoscopic skills and an interest in teaching are essential.

Main duties of the job

To ensure that services are responsive to the needs of patients and other service users and their families.

Where appropriate, to facilitate working arrangements between the subspecialty teams within the service.

To meet regularly with key members of the multidisciplinary team and support effective multidisciplinary team working.

To work closely with the DCD and management team to respond to and meet external standards relevant to the Service.

To support the college tutor and educational supervisor in junior medical staff issues training and performance.

To support the DCD, implement and monitor compliance plans to ensure that all junior medical staff within the Service are compliant with legal requirements.
