Clinical Nurse Specialist,Autonomic Unit
Speciality Neurology
This is an exciting and interesting opportunity to join a small, well established nursing team. The nursing team is part of a multidisciplinary autonomic service who assess, diagnose and treat people with a range of autonomic disorders.
No prior autonomic knowledge or experience is expected as comprehensive autonomic training will be provided.
You will be expected, with the support of the autonomic team, to provide high quality patient care. This will include support and education to newly diagnosed patients/families, management of acute patient treatments and providing support and surveillance of long-term complex patients. Liaison with health professionals within UCLH and outside the Trust in both primary and secondary care is an important part of the role.
Main duties of the job
To assess the health and wellbeing of people with autonomic disorders who attend the hospital as inpatients, outpatients and day care users.
To provide an individualised approach to patient care in collaboration with the wider autonomic team
To work collaboratively with the autonomic nursing team to:
plan and deliver programs to address the diagnostic needs of people with autonomic disorders
plan and deliver programs to address the complex and changing health and well-being needs of people with autonomic disorders
To provide expert advice to patients and health professionals through the autonomic telephone and email service
To contribute to the development of services for people with autonomic disorders

Knowledge of autonomic disorders is not essential as you will undertake a training program however experience working with patients and families with complex care needs either in neurology, palliative care or other chronic disease would be an advantage as would experience of teaching or training patients and families.
You should be motivated to learning about autonomic conditions. Experience in managing your own workload, problem solving are essential.

The autonomic nurses work alongside consultants, scientists, administrators and researchers. They play a vital role in the delivery of excellent patient care.
As a tertiary centre our patients are referred from within neurology as well as cardiology, endocrinology and rheumatology. We also have an adolescent service. Maintaining good working relationships with our referrers is important to us.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate and lead autonomic patient care in day-care, outpatient and inpatient settings
- To develop and maintain skills to participate in assessing, planning, organisation and delivery of care for people with complex autonomic disorders including autonomic rehabilitation
- To develop and maintain skills in telephone, video and electronic care interactions
- Enhance the care of people with autonomic disorders by providing expert patient and family/supporter information and education
- Provide professional input and leadership to autonomic multidisciplinary team, NHNN nursing and therapy service and primary and secondary care.
- To engage and review the established autonomic care pathways
- To promote patient equality, diversity and rights
