Job summary
This post is for a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist (Special interest Neuro-Oncology) replacing the current locum post, (10 PA). The successful candidate would ideally also major in neuro-oncology with an additional responsibility for external referrals for PBT (driving new research in this novel area of practice for brain tumours, particularly TYA). Participating in National groups particularly for TYA typical tumours would be encouraged. Options for site specialisation /practices in other tumour groups or techniques would additionally be encouraged.
This is an exciting time of growth and development for the Childrens and Young Peoples Cancer Services at UCLH. The planned expansion is based on the additional new workload to accommodate the national referral pathways for proton beam therapy and a recognised requirement to drive innovation in outcomes for TYA orphan cancers and deliver expertise in both targeted and cellular therapies.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidates will join the existing team in CYPCS, where there is flexibility to align the candidates interests to complement existing speciality interests. CYPCS is hosted within the Childrens and Young person's Division at UCH and sits alongside other tertiary and secondary paediatric services. CYPCS also benefits from being nested within a large adult cancer hospital and from its close working relationships for TYA neuro-oncology with the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, the largest neurology service in the country. With established links to both UCL and the UCL medical school we support ongoing excellence in medical education and link in with innovative researchers in novel, but important future research drivers, such as AI.
The current CYPCS team consists of 7 WTE CYP oncologists and 6 WTE TYA haematologists. The CYP oncology services provide care for the largest specialist radiotherapy cohort in the UK: UCH is one of two national providers for PBT and molecular radiotherapy and the national provider for paediatric brachytherapy. In addition, the team look after the entire range of TYA oncology diagnoses and host the chemoradiotherapy treatment options for the regional London Sarcoma Service.

Together, UCH and GOSH provide services for the North London ODN via the Childrens and TYA Primary Treatment Centres. A Joint GOSH-UCLH Partnership board, chaired by both Trusts CEOs, supports service delivery and development. UCH CYPCS is well supported by onsite HDU provision and a developmentally appropriate ICU for TYA patients and GOSH ICU for patients requiring PICU care < 13 years age.
Specialist senior nurse teams, who have led the innovation of independent practices in ambulatory care, provide nurse consultant clinics and lead a highly specialist nursing workforce. We are fortunate to have multi-disciplinary teams expert in complex trauma care and safeguarding and allied health professionals with complementary specialist expertise in prehabilitation and rehabilitation
In addition to sub-speciality work, the post holders will contribute to the general paediatric oncology service, teaching and educational supervision roles. The posts will contribute to the CYPCS acute on-call rota. This will be a 1:6.5 consultant on call for paediatric oncology and 1:7 out of hours on call and weekends, with ward rounds on site each day; and subsequently on call from home with return if necessary. The CYPCS haematologists who are responsible for haematologic malignancy, run separate attending and on call rotas. The general paediatric team includes 14 paediatricians (10.6 WTE). Most participate in a consultant-of-the-week attending service, general paediatric clinics and participate in a 1:10 on-call.
Our facilities include the state-of-the-art Grafton Way Building which hosts the PBT services; the UCLH Macmillan cancer centre, a £100 million facility offering TYA inpatient chemotherapy protocols in an ambulatory care setting supported by local hotels with capability to support treatment for at least 100 new patients per year and age-appropriate cancer facilities across 2 floors of inpatient services. There are currently 20 inpatient beds in the UCLH Tower for the TYA age group and a further 10 15 beds for inpatient/ ambulatory care of children, including lead lined suites for the national therapeutic molecular radioisotope service.
Future expansion of the service to include private beds for international patients is in advanced development. This practice will provide NHS patients an opportunity to benefit from additional investment as a direct result. Successful candidates may choose to undertake private practice if they wish to do so.
Eligibility for full GMC registration and specialty accreditation in Paediatric Oncology are required. Applicants who will be within 6 months of obtaining CCT at time of interview may apply.
