Job summary

We are pleased to invite applicants for this rare opportunity to apply for a clinical research fellow post in the National 'Highly Specialized Service for McArdle disease and Related Disorders'.

The service looks after patients from around the UK who present with exercise intolerance and or acute rhabdomyolysis related to exercise, it is the only service of its kind in the UK and looks after a large cohort of patients with rare inherited metabolic disorders of muscle.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join a highly specialized multi-disciplinary team including: consultant in neuromuscular disease, clinical nurse specialist, physiotherapist, dietitian, clinical psychologist and sports and exercise physiologist. Patients are assessed with functional exercise tests including: forearm exercise test, cycle ergometry and 12 minute walk test to assess performance and full training in these techniques will be given. Patient care includes exercise advice and management.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a clinical research project. The service is conducting a prospective natural history audit of patients with rare muscle glycogen storage disorders, searching for new genetic causes of acute rhabdomyolysis using NGS panels, whole exome and genome sequencing and muscle MRI.
