Job summary
We are looking for an experienced nurse to lead the Therapeutic Plasma Exchange Service at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. As a result of increasing clinical demand the lead nurse will be responsible for overseeing the expansion and development of the neurology plasma exchange service. Plasma Exchange is an intervention which is used for the acute and chronic treatment of autoimmune neurological conditions such as Myasthenia Gravis, Guillain-Barr Syndrome, Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder, autonomic neuropathy, stiff person syndrome and Autoimmune Encephalitis amongst others
Main duties of the job
The post holder will have experience of working at a senior level with patients with neurological disease, be an expert in the delivery of therapeutic plasma exchange and will possess exemplary skills in delivering therapy through peripheral and central access devices including port a caths.
Development and training of the nursing team and increasing the capacity of the service in the inpatient and outpatient setting is a key aspect of the role. The successful candidate will hold a mentorship or teaching qualification and will have demonstrable leadership qualities and skills. Project management, ability to lead service improvement initiatives and budget responsibility are essential skills for this role.
This is a service for neurology patients and it is the expectation that disease outcome measurement and neurological examination will form part of the role. The successful candidate will conduct telephone clinics with neurological patients and will be responsible for the development of standard operating procedures and protocols for the service. There will the opportunity to lead audit and research projects and present and publish the findings.
It is expected that the post holder will work closely with clinical and non-clinical leads to ensure there is safe delivery of the service, that team members are supported to attain an appropriate level of competence, and that systems and procedures are created and embedded.

Nurses working at an advanced or senior level will:
Work and lead, with support from the specialist consultant, on a suitable, safe, and effective pathway protocol for the transition of patients requiring urgent plasma exchange intervention to routine scheduled sessions. To lead and develop teaching and training of healthcare professionals to deliver plasma exchange in the PLEX unit.
To lead and develop teaching and training of healthcare professionals to deliver plasma exchange from the ITU to hospital wide patient population.
Maintain skills and experience in management of plasma exchange services and facilitate the implementation of the UCLH Nursing & Midwifery strategy. To review plasma exchange nursing practice on the PLEX Unit and implement appropriate changes based on research/best practice. To review plasma exchange nursing practice situated in the ITU and implement appropriate changes based on research/best practice. Develop and implement audit, quality and risk management initiatives within the plasma exchange service To contribute to the development of services required for patients receiving plasma exchange within the NHNN. Practice autonomously and be self-directed.
Undertake assessment of individuals using a range of different assessment methods in relation to plasma exchange treatment. This may include physical examination or ordering and interpreting blood results.
Undertake nurse led pre and post admission clinics
Liaise with the haematology and neurology teams to address and manage coagulation abnormalities due to plasma exchange treatment.
Actively seek and participate in peer review of own practice.
Appropriately define the boundaries of practice.
Promote and participate in the implementation of the UCLH Nursing & Midwifery strategy and Core Standards and contribute towards achieving the TrustsObjectives.
To be an integral part of the specialist plasma exchange team providing a quality driven service for patients.
Will ensure that key standards of service delivery are measured, reported, and acted upon.
Provide education to patients, families and healthcare professionals.
To be a visible and accessible lead within the plasma exchange service at the NHNN.
Participate professional self-development and individual performance review (IPR).
To develop own skills in vascular insertion and management and lead on embedding this as a core skill in the nursing team
