Job summary

We are recruiting Diabetes Specialist Nurses (Band 6), to join our existing nursing team, working in close collaboration with our dietetic, psychology and medical colleagues. We have 2 vacant full-time posts, with the nursing service.

Our diabetes service supports over 600 children and young people with diabetes (aged 0-19 years), across an inpatient and outpatient setting. Since COVID, the service delivery model is a hybrid of both face-to-face and virtual and you will be required to do a mix of working from home and working on site, within UCLH (depending on service needs).

We require an RN (child) nurse with a minimum of 2 years paediatric experience, which includes working with children and/or adolescents with diabetes.

You need to be enthusiastic about working within this specialty; have excellent communication and organisational skills and an ability to work in collaboration with other professionals.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities for this individual will be:

  1. To participate in a regular review of the responsibilities of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) as a service provider, examining the structure and processes against all criteria identified in the Best Practice Tariff, National Paediatric Diabetes Audit and Peer review.
  2. Responsible for delivering day-to-day care for a caseload of children and young people with diabetes using multiple daily insulin injections, insulin pumps, hybrid closed loop pumps and continuous glucose monitoring.
  3. Maintain effective communication with children, young people, families and carers to give information about diabetes to enable informed decisions.
  4. Provide nursing support in MDT clinics and Nurse Led clinics (face-to-face and video clinics); telephone clinics and holding the emergency telephone.
  5. Responsible for diabetes teaching including education of CYP and families; carers and school staff; student and ward nurses.
