Job summary
We are recruiting Diabetes Specialist Nurses (Band 6), to join our existing nursing team, working in close collaboration with our dietetic, psychology and medical colleagues. We have 2 vacant full-time posts, with the nursing service.
Our diabetes service supports over 600 children and young people with diabetes (aged 0-19 years), across an inpatient and outpatient setting. Since COVID, the service delivery model is a hybrid of both face-to-face and virtual and you will be required to do a mix of working from home and working on site, within UCLH (depending on service needs).
We require an RN (child) nurse with a minimum of 2 years paediatric experience, which includes working with children and/or adolescents with diabetes.
You need to be enthusiastic about working within this specialty; have excellent communication and organisational skills and an ability to work in collaboration with other professionals.
Main duties of the job
Key responsibilities for this individual will be:
- To participate in a regular review of the responsibilities of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) as a service provider, examining the structure and processes against all criteria identified in the Best Practice Tariff, National Paediatric Diabetes Audit and Peer review.
- Responsible for delivering day-to-day care for a caseload of children and young people with diabetes using multiple daily insulin injections, insulin pumps, hybrid closed loop pumps and continuous glucose monitoring.
- Maintain effective communication with children, young people, families and carers to give information about diabetes to enable informed decisions.
- Provide nursing support in MDT clinics and Nurse Led clinics (face-to-face and video clinics); telephone clinics and holding the emergency telephone.
- Responsible for diabetes teaching including education of CYP and families; carers and school staff; student and ward nurses.
