Biomedical Engineering Apprentice at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery - Band 4 *Annex 21
The Biomedical Engineering department is based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London. We are a world renowned hospital responsible for the treatment of patients with neurological disorders and part of University College London Hospitals. We provide whole life equipment management services for the range of medical equipment in use across the hospital and also in external organisations who purchase our services. We are a small, dedicated team with 8 members of staff based in workshops in the main hospital.
We are now looking to recruit a self-motivated individual willing to complete a Healthcare Science Associate Apprenticeship and join our team carrying out scheduled preventative maintenance, servicing, non-routine repair, calibration, safety and acceptance testing on a wide range of medical equipment. A combination of work-based and formal training will be provided, with the opportunity to gain an Apprenticeship Diploma at Level 2 and Level 4.
Main duties of the job
The Biomedical Engineering department is a fast pace environment where tasks are turned around quickly to meet the demands of the medical staff and their patients. Therefore, we require an apprentice who pays attention to detail, is not afraid to ask questions and is able to learn on the job, whilst balancing the needs of their apprenticeship training
Please note: to meet the criteria for the apprenticeship funding and qualification:
- GCSEs will be required at grades A-C/4-9 or equivalent
- Certificates will be requested before interview - results slips cannot be accepted
- Applicants must have the right to work in the UK - UK/EEC/EEA - to meet the funding requirements
- Applicants must not be enrolled in any other form of education
This will be a Fixed Term Contract for 38 months. You will be paid Annex 21, Band 4 for the duration of the course. For illustration purposes - the current basic pay journey under *Annex 21 is as follows:
Year 1 = 65% top of band 4 (£27,157) £17,652.05
Year 2 = 70% top of band 4 (£27,157), £19,009.90
Year 3 = 75% top of band 4 (£27,157), £20,367.75
This will be a three stage process for shortlisted candidates:
1st stage - Assessments - 31 May
2nd stage - Informal visit to the site - 9/10 June
3rd stage - Interviews - 16 June

During training:
- To learn and perform the duties of an Associate Clinical Technologist, under the guidance and supervision of qualified members of the Biomedical Engineering team.
- To undertake a structured and comprehensive training and education programme to obtain:
- Healthcare Science (HCS) Assistant (Level 2) Apprenticeship certificate after completing the End Point Assessment on 14th month of the apprenticeship programme. This includes the Level 2 Diploma in HCS.
- On successful completion of the above-mentioned Level 2 apprenticeship you will be enrolled onto HCS Associate (Level 4) programme. The duration of the Level 4 programme is two years.
- Healthcare Science Associate (level 4) apprenticeship certificate after completing the End Point Assessment on around 38th month of the apprenticeship programme. This includes the Level 4 Diploma in HCS.
On completion of training:
- To provide technical and engineering support as part of the Biomedical Engineering service catering for all general clinical areas in NHNN. There will be a particular focus on assisting other technologists in locating and tracking devices, liaison with nursing staff to organise access for servicing of equipment, and carrying out basic servicing and planned maintenance. This requires updating of records in the department equipment database so as to ensure all jobs are recorded.
