Job summary

Two new exciting consultant post opportunities have arisen at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Candidates are invited to apply for two locum posts of Consultant in Obstetrics. The 10 PA post has a Maternal Medicine component and the 6 PA post is a general obstetric post.

Our Obstetric department is expanding and we are increasing Labour Ward consultant cover to 97 hours per week. While we are creating and awaiting approval for substantive posts, we require two enthusiastic obstetricians to enable the increased consultant presence as well as cover for colleagues who have been seconded to national roles.

Both posts will include daytime Labour Ward cover as well as elective caesarean section lists. Furthermore, there will be antenatal clinic cover. Depending on the individual interests and experience, one or both appointees will be supported to lead on the UCLH maternity emergency training. Furthermore, both appointees will support our Safety team by attending PMRT panels and undertaking SI investigations.

The posts will be based in the EGA Wing at UCLH, a new purpose built £70 million maternity and gynaecology building which opened in November 2008 and provides a unique opportunity for the co-location of essential maternity services.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a new Locum NHS appointment (6 PAs) at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) for 6 months in the first instance, to commence as soon as possible. This is to cover clinical activity of other colleagues (e.g. secondment to national positions resulting in temporary reduction of clinical activity) as well as lead on maternity skills training and safety as required by the Ockenden report.

The clinical duties will involve labour ward, elective lists for caesarean sections, antenatal clinics, triage and ward rounds as required and may vary weekly dependent on need. This job will provide the post-holder with an excellent opportunity for career development in a first class teaching hospital.

The successful candidate would be encouraged to develop and implement innovative ideas to continue to improve safety, efficiency and patient experience and reinforce UCLH position as a class leader in maternity care. The post-holder will cover 6 clinical programmed activities, primarily on Labour Ward, with no on-call commitment. They will participate in the rota for daily antenatal teaching ward rounds on allocated days. There is prospective labour ward and antenatal ward round cover built into the rota.

Job description

Job responsibilities

This role contains 6 programmed activities per week on average to be carried out on UCLH sites and will include on-call commitments. This is an outline programme and you will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan including your personal and professional objectives with your clinical director and clinical lead within 3 months of your start date.

The post-holder will be expected to further develop high quality, safe, efficient and innovative care and enhance patient experience. The candidate will be added to the consultant body to help cover colleagues absence/secondment.

The obstetric unit at UCLH is the North Central London Perinatal Centre and hence is a busy high-risk unit. The post-holder will further enhance the strong obstetric service at UCLH. The post will contribute to labour ward consultant cover to 97h per week. Labour ward cover will be weekday 08.00-22.00 (14h) and Weekend 08:0021:30 (13.5h). This will include increased labour ward cover and consultant presence with at least two 12-hourly Labour Ward rounds, which are essential safety and efficiency improvements. This post does not include out of hours commitment at present. This may change by mutual consent during the course of the appointment.

All Obstetric consultants are on a 1:14 on call rota with prospective cover. Consultants are expected to be resident on weekdays from 08:00 till 22:00 and weekends from 08:00 to 18:00. The total labour ward PAs are calculated on an annualised basis incorporating both daytime and resident after hours on call. The post-holder will contribute 5 PAs on Labour ward, mainly on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The Labour Ward commitment is likely to reduce after few months pending a new substantive consultant appointment. The successful candidate will be encouraged and supported to develop special interests and it is likely they will be able to participate in antenatal clinics. There are some anticipated job plan changes in the next few months, so the job plan may be slightly different by the time of the appointment.
