Job summary

Student AAs will work to qualify with an MSc in Anaesthesia and Perioperative Science with UCL during this two-year post.

Student AAs are expected to progress through the 2-year AA training programme, in a blended-learning model. Gaining practical skills, knowledge, expertise and experience in the clinical environment and expanding their knowledge and understanding academically using the online learning platform provided by UCL as a base for their studies.

Students are expected to undertake self-directed learning, be proactive and be flexible regarding the scheduling of tutorials.

Student AAs will be working in acute care settings where patients are vulnerable and potentially completely dependent on the anaesthetic team for their care. The nature of the working environment and responsibility involved needs to be fully appreciated by potential candidates.

To facilitate learning and meet training requirements Students must be able to frequently travel to multiple sites: UCLH, Guys & St Tomas's Hospital, The Royal Free Hospital.

Students will be expected to attend training and examinations provided by UCL or/and at the Royal College of Anaesthetists, London. This will require access to a vehicle or the ability to utilise public transport to facilitate this. These external visits will normally be less than once a month.

Main duties of the job

The role of Anaesthesia Associate is evolving. The Royal College of Anaesthetists and Association of Anaesthetists have guidelines for what a newly qualified Anaesthesia Associate may do. However individual Trusts may train AA's in additional roles and competences. The expectation is that upon qualification Anaesthesia Associates will be able to:

  • Work as a member of the anaesthetic team.
  • Work competently under appropriate supervision.
  • Perform pre-operative assessment of patients.
  • Ensure the safely and readiness of the environment for anaesthesia.
  • Implement an anaesthetic care plan under appropriate supervision.
  • Perform a variety of practical skills necessary for provision of anaesthesia, including IV access and intubation. Perform induction and reversal of anaesthesia under the direct supervision of an anaesthetist.
  • Safely manage maintenance of anaesthesia.
  • Safely position patients.
  • Administer medicines/fluids.
  • Conduct postoperative assessment.
  • Contemporaneously document the provision of care.

Those with additional experience and skills, may carry out additional roles as appropriate. At all times the AA is expected to work within their level of competency and supervision appropriate to that level.
