We have an exciting vacancy for a Research Clinical Fellow within Medical Microbiology at our University College Hospital site (50% research, 50% clinical). This an opportunity to join a dynamic department with input into specialist haematology, oncology, neurology and neurosurgical services as well as liaison with general medical, surgical and paediatric departments within a London teaching hospital. The postholder would contribute to expanding research activities within the Department of Microbiology. The fields of greatest interest currently are antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention control and neurosurgical infections, but there will also be scope to explore research opportunities in other areas.

Main duties of the job
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated Senior Clinical Research Fellow (ST4+ or equivalent) to support the clinical service and to expand research activities within the Department of Microbiology. The fields of greatest interest currently are antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention control and neurosurgical infections, but there will also be scope to explore research opportunities in other areas.
The job will be split evenly between research and the provision of clinical service in Clinical Microbiology and UCL research laboratories (depending on candidate interest).
The Department of Clinical Microbiology (NHS) offers a wide range of experience to train Medical Microbiology/Virology/Infectious Diseases Specialist Registrars to the standards required for Core and Higher Specialty Infection Training for the Part 1 and Part 2 FRCPath examinations.
The post-holder will also have access to training resources and opportunities available to specialist trainees in the department, which is part of the 'Bloomsbury hub' for training in Infection in London, collaborating with clinical teams, other clinical fellows, nurses and laboratory biomedical scientists.

The post holder will join a vibrant team of clinicians with a strong and expanding research focus, through its links with University College London and other infection-associated clinical research activity at UCLH. The post holder will receive mentorship in the development, execution and analysis of projects from clinicians with experience of both clinical and research supervision. The post is not immediately aligned to any specific research project, but the post-holder will be encouraged to develop projects complementary to the research interests and activities within the department, supporting translational research that benefits patient care at UCLH and beyond. This includes, but is not limited to, antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention control and optimising care of neurosurgical infections. Scoping out new areas of research activity that align to the post holders interests and expertise will also be supported.

The clinical fellow will undertake the role of the microbiology specialty registrar for their clinical duties and will participate in the work of the department in clinical liaison, laboratory and infection control, under supervision of the consultants, focusing on the diagnosis and management of patients, and prevention of infections. He/she will also have the opportunity to lead on liaison activities, dependent on the level of previous experience / level of training.
