Job summary

North Central London Cancer Alliance (NCLCA) is seeking a Programme Director to lead delivery of an exciting portfolio of work improving cancer outcomes for the population of North Central London (NCL).

NCLCA is a collaboration of NHS and other bodies, hosted by UCLH NHS Foundation Trust. We work to encourage early diagnosis, optimise pathways, reduce variation, provide personalised support for patients, and build service resilience. Patients and carers are at the heart of what we do.

The NCLCA Programme Director has a critical role in delivering this agenda, leading a team of experts and working with the NCL Integrated Care System to lead ambitious change programmes. The

Programme Director is also accountable to NHS England for NCL's delivery of the national cancer plan requirements.

This is an opportunity to influence care on a system scale, driving transformation across multiple settings. The successful candidate will be committed and collaborative, with experience of leading large NHS improvement programmes, deploying resources within complex governance structures.

They will be able to build strong relationships with senior stakeholders and skilled at leading teams. Experience in cancer services is highly beneficial.

The role is advertised at agenda for change band 9, but VSM will be considered for the right candidate.

Main duties of the job

The Programme Director leads a team of programme managers and clinical leads to develop and deliver work programmes linked to the national cancer strategy and key priorities for cancer in

NCL. These include achieving sustainable delivery of cancer services, an effective population health approach to prevention and early diagnosis, whole pathway transformation across the

NCL sector, advising on cancer commissioning decisions, and roll-out of innovations and implementation of new clinical developments.

The Programme Directors ensures that the Alliance functions as a key part of the NCL Integrated Care System, aligning with the vision for related services, and drives delivery through effective relationships with system leaders. They are also responsible for planning and delivering the Alliance's transformation work, deploying system development funding (~£4m annually) across 5 programmes of work: prevention, awareness and screening; primary care; diagnosis and treatment; personalised care, and; inequalities.

Duties include ensuring that the Alliance's programme delivery infrastructure supports robust implementation, including governance, budget management, communications and engagement, and monitoring and evaluation. The Programme Director acts as the main representative of the cancer system within NCL and in national and regional meetings and is responsible for ensuring effective patient input, clinical engagement and a focus on tackling inequalities in care and outcomes.

About us

The Programme Director is supported by a senior team of 3 programme leads and an Associate Programme Director, with extensive experience in cancer policy and services, as well as team of project and programme managers and specialist analytical resource. The Alliance also has 2 Co- Clinical Directors who support development and delivery of strategy. An expert reference group for every tumour pathway is led by a Clinical Network Director, who also advises the Programme Director and directly leads improvement work.

The team is based at Wimpole Street in central London, but flexible home working is available several days per week. The team is friendly, dedicated and has depth of experience and knowledge of cancer services, as well as highly developed relationships with cancer clinicians, managers, commissioners and patient representatives across all our constituent organisations and pathways.

The Director is also the responsible manager for the Centre for Cancer Outcomes, dedicated to developing the role that data innovation plays in improving outcomes for people with cancer.
