Job summary

This post is one of the 5 Executive voting board member of the London Ambulance Service Trust Board.

There are four distinct elements to the portfolio for this post.

  • Operational performance - as the joint executive lead for operational performance with the Chief Medical Officer the post holder will develop and implement operational strategies to ensure the trust meets the ambulance quality indicators in respect of clinical operational performance. The Chief Paramedic has direct line responsibility for the largest operating division in the service - Ambulance Operations which employs c5,000 staff.
  • Accountable Emergency Officer - the post holder has board responsibility for the Trust's preparedness and response to major incidents and so holds the EPRR and resilience portfolios

  • Education and development of the paramedic profession - Fostering a culture of professionalism, respect, innovation and collaboration across the Trust, the post holder will act as the organisation's most senior paramedic professional representing the views of the profession on the Trust Board and championing Board driven physical and cultural change across the service
  • Corporate responsibilities - The post holder will develop mechanisms to increase and sustain and develop safeguarding ( as the Executive Lead) strategies, operational governance, and lead on development of the Quality Improvement Plan 'LAS Improve,

Main duties of the job

  • To support the development of the vision and strategy for the trust with particular responsibilities as designated by the Chief Executive officer.
  • Create an environment where paramedics see change as an essential element of healthcare, demonstrated through a quick and positive response in the face of the need for change.
  • Through the change process, provides stability and openly re-evaluates decisions in light of new data, conditions or situations and develop alliances that extend beyond the sphere of paramedic professionals
  • Develop a strategic approach which anticipates the future demands for paramedics and the impact on patient care in order to identify potential opportunities and risks.
  • Develop the overarching quality improvement strategy for the Trust and act as Executive Lead for Safeguarding
  • Developing effective strategy and operational policies for delivering professional clinical education to ensure competent and capable frontline staff can achieve high standards of care across London;
  • Being accountable for developing a strategy for supporting and ensuring alignment of services' standards across the range of education programs Pan-London, from in-house and external providers, to meet Trust needs.
