Job summary

The overall aim of the Advanced Paramedic Practitioner - Urgent Care (APP-UC) is to assess, treat and safely discharge patients, or utilise appropriate care pathways to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions.

Their main objective is to take a detailed history from patients and provide a targeted advanced assessment. To do this they may utilise additional skills such as a detailed neurological assessment, otoscopy and ophthalmology, pregnancy tests and urinalysis and point of care blood testing. As well as this the APP-UC has an extended medicines formulary and other interventions such as wound closure.

The role combines the APP-UC working autonomously as solo responders to 999 and 111 calls, with rotational placements across different clinical settings outside of the ambulance service. Rotating through general practice, Urgent Care Centres, minor injury units and other community settings supports the development of this alternative model of urgent care, and maintains the ongoing competence of the APP-UC skills in these areas.

Main duties of the job

Responding to a range of 999 and 111 calls the APP-UC will utilise advanced clinical skills to assess, treat and/or refer or discharge patients utilising advanced assessment techniques, accomplished clinical decision making and diagnosis. Aiming to keep the patient at home or within the community the APP-UC work closely with other healthcare providers in the capital, rotating across different clinical settings such as General Practice, Urgent Care Centres and Minor Injury Units.

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc (Hons) in Paramedic Science or equivalent clinical academic qualifications.
  • Commitment to achieve the relevant Post Graduate (Level 7) advanced practice qualification as determined by the employer.
  • HCPC registered Paramedic
  • Willingness to undertake further development to become a non-medical independent prescriber

Desirable

  • Master's degree or Post Graduate qualification in a relevant field
  • A recognised teaching qualification or equivalent demonstrable ability with evidence of teaching in practice and/ or classroom situations.
  • Mentoring and coaching; minimum of PPEd level 3 (certificate) or significant demonstrable development of mentoring and coaching skills through formal learning and application
  • Qualification incorporating extended clinical practice skills (e.g. Paramedic/Emergency Care Practitioner, Critical Care Paramedic)

Experience

Essential

  • Recent experience working as a solo practitioner.
  • Commitment to rotational working through other practice settings and inter- professional working
