Job summary
The role of Functional Skills Tutor is to deliver maths and English skills from entry level to Level 2 as well as to provide support for learners in preparation for entering further education or the workplace. You will achieve this through delivering classroom sessions as well as through small group, individual and tailored 1-2-1 support. The work will be based in the Kingswood Centre, which is a vocational and recreation facility shared by the various wards.
The post holder will work as part of the Vocational Services and Kingswood Team and closely with the Occupational Therapy Department providing therapeutic activities for patients within North London Forensic Service based at Chase Farm Hospital.
Main duties of the job
- Identify the individual needs of learners ensuring that all learners have an individual learning plan which links to their long-term employment goals.
- Continually review learner's progression to ensure that the training continues to meet their identified needs.
- Preparing, delivering and reviewing lesson plans for all sessions that address the training needs of the group including basic literacy, numeracy, language and other social/employability barriers to employment.
- Working with colleagues / hosts to assist learner's progression towards qualifications, and movement into employment.
- To work autonomously with patients and referring Occupational Therapists to identify goals for patients attending art related sessions as part of the overall care-plan.
- To plan and implement patient centred individual and/or group interventions, using graded activity to achieve educational goals.
About us
The NLFS provides forensic care for a wide catchment area, namely Camden, Islington, Haringey, Barnet and Enfield. The Occupational Therapy team and Vocational Service team cover a wide spectrum of services including admission, acute and intervention inpatient care, hostels, outreach, aftercare as well as healthcare provision including HMYOI Feltham and HMYOI Aylesbury, HMP Pentonville, HMP Wormwood Scrubs, HMP Grendon and HMP Brixton. The catchment area is exceptionally ethnically diverse with an extremely high level of psychiatric morbidity and social deprivation. The post holder will therefore may be required to work on occasion with interpreters.
The post holder will be working in a locked environment with patients detained under The Mental Health Act, 1983 (amended 2007), many of whom suffer from a severe and enduring mental illness and / or learning disability / autism which may present itself at times in episodes of violence to others or the environment. This will include routinely working with distressing forensic material in the context of a severe and enduring mental illness. Specialist skills and 'forensic awareness' are required of all staff working in the NLFS, which includes vigilance at all times on issues of safety and security, the capability to de-escalate the risk of violence, and the ability and capacity to deliver clinical care in locked, sometimes volatile, and sometimes distressing circumstances.

- To advise the Vocational Services Manager of requirements regarding resources and equipment and to order equipment accordingly.

- To undertake in-service mandatory training within the NLFS
- To participate in staff professional development via teaching sessions (departmentally or more broadly).
- To instruct in and ensure health and safety, fire, emergency and security procedures are adhered to, with particular focus on the Kingswood Centre.
- To ensure that new OT department staff and new outside agency staff are inducted into the NLFS service in term of policies and procedures and good practice and that they are able to operate in a supported environment, particularly within the Kingswood Centre.
- To maintain a professional practice portfolio through maintaining clinical work and to ensure the opportunity for reflective practice.
Professional Responsibilities

- To demonstrate ongoing personal development through participation in internal and external development opportunities, recording learning outcomes in a portfolio
- To be aware of and keep up-to-date with current literature and best practice within specialist field
