Job summary

The post holder will have lived experience as carer, relative or close friend of someone with mental health problems and/or learning disability and autism. You will work closely with the inpatient wards, community teams and the Friends and Family group.

Carer Peer Support Worker (CPW) will provide formalised support and practical assistance to carers/friends/family to support them in their role, to support service user and themselves to regain control over their lives and their own unique recovery process, enabling them to 'Live, Love, Do'.

Through sharing the wisdom from their own lived experience, the CPW will inspire hope and belief that recovery is possible in others. Within a relationship of mutuality, they will facilitate and support information sharing to promote choice, self-determination, and opportunities for the fulfillment of socially valued roles and connection to local communities

Main duties of the job

The CPW will work alongside an carers/friends/family on a 1:1 and/or group basis as well as attending service and Trust wide meetings to represent the carer perspective. You will be responsible for the delivery of carer peer support interventions as agreed and feed into the care planning process as required by the service.

  1. To work alongside the social work team, Systemic Therapist, inpatient nursing, occupational therapy and psychology teams to support the development of carer representation and voice, particularly where a relative has been recently admitted to the service.
  2. To attend and contribute to the Friends and Family group and support arrangements for and facilitation of meetings.
  3. To engage in carer networks across the North London Provider Collaborative.
  4. To attend the Forensic Quality and Engagement Committee to ensure the experience of families is represented and issues raised.
  5. To develop publicity materials with the administrative team to support carers to be aware of the services available to them and how to access support.
  6. To attend Trust and service meetings to represent the carer perspective and influence thinking and practice
  7. To make links with outside community resources to support the development and inclusion or information and signposting for carers.

NLFS is an OUTSTANDING rated service based at Chase Farm Hospital site who are excited to develop the peer support worker role within the service to include carer peer support worker and develop our work with friends and families of our service users.

We provide inpatient services to North Central London of both medium and low secure forensic care, including a women's service and 2 secure wards for patients with a learning disability. In addition, services are provided in the community, including a 24-bed low secure unit, assertive outreach teams and in-reach to local prisons.

There are excellent training opportunities a structured development programme as well as a range of specialist training such as CBT, motivational interviewing, physical health skills and QI training.

The NLFS provides forensic care for a wide catchment area, namely Camden, Islington, Haringey, Barnet and Enfield. The role will involve input into admission and intervention inpatient care, hostels, outreach and aftercare.
