Job summary

We are seeking to appoint a General Adult Consultant Psychiatrist on Thames ward at the Dennis Scott Unit, Edgware Community Hospital in Barnet.

Thames ward is a mixed gender acute psychiatric ward with twenty beds. The ward provides assessment and treatment for patients who cannot be safely managed in the community by our Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment Teams. This includes a significant number of patients detained on Sections 2 and 3 of the Mental Health Act. The ward serves patients residing in the London Borough of Barnet, although may also receive some referrals from the other two boroughs within the Trust.

Main duties of the job

You will be a clinical leader within the service and expected to contribute to the development of services.

Participation in research and educational activities will be encouraged. You must have full GMC registration and have a CCT in general adult psychiatry or be within 6 months of completion of training or be eligible for inclusion on the specialist register at the time of interview.

Job responsibilities

  • To provide psychiatrist assessment and treatment of acute psychiatrist inpatients.
  • To take on the role of Responsible Clinician for detained patients.
  • To produce reports for CQC Tribunals and Hospital Managers hearings.
  • To take the lead on prescribing and risk assessments.
  • To participate and lead daily patient management meetings: white board meetings.
  • Liaison with CRHTTs, care coordinators, GPs.
  • To provide clinical and professional leadership within the post, and take part in management activities and governance processes related to the post or the wider service within which it is embedded.
  • As a senior clinician, to have an integral role in the performance of the ward team, further development of the service, and the development of the clinical pathways and priorities of the service line.
  • To teach and supervise medical staff and other professionals in all aspects of psychiatric care.
  • Compliance with all legal obligations covering clinical practice (e.g. Mental Health Act and code of practice).
  • A commitment to ensuring fair access to services for all.
  • Compliance with procedures whereby doctors report concerns about professional conduct or competence of medical or other colleagues.
