The successful applicant will join a team of 27 Consultant Forensic Psychiatrists within the North London Forensic Service, a large and successful forensic psychiatric service in north London, with its secure care services being deemed outstanding by the CQC.

The successful applicant will have responsibility for managing half the patients (up to 12 patients) detained under the Mental Health Act in a step down low secure service (Avesbury House) in Enfield, north London, and to provide Consultant leadership to the Specialist Community Forensic Team (SCFT), where (s)he will be expected to act as the responsible clinician for up to a maximum of 12 in patients in low security and 20 community patients discharged from secure care. The successful applicant will work in multidisciplinary teams, which will include junior doctors, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and nursing staff.

Main duties of the job

This post is for Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist within the North London Forensic Service, Barnet Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust. The role is split between managing half of the patients at the Avesbury House step down low secure service (the management of up to 12 patients) and providing Consultant Leadership to the Specialist Community Forensic Team (alongside the existing experienced full time and half time Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist in post).

This post has arisen through the further development of Specialist Community Forensic Services and the wish to integrate community services with step down services to provide a clear discharge and care pathway for patients leaving step-down secure care.

Until the candidate has built up an active caseload of 10 or more patients the successful candidate will be expected to provide Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Liaison to Coral Ward PICU, Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust (CANDI) to gatekeep admissions to secure care. The numbers from recent years, indicate the successful candidate will see approximately 20 new referrals a from Coral Ward PICU a year.

To provide psychiatric assessment and treatment of forensic psychiatric inpatients.

To take on the role of Responsible Clinician for detained patients.

To produce reports for CQC Tribunals, Hospital Managers hearings and Criminal Justice System were required.

To take the lead on prescribing and risk assessments.

To participate and lead weekly ward rounds at both respective sites.

Liaison with Courts, prisons, Ministry of Justice, MAPPA (Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements) and General Adult Psychiatric Services.

To provide clinical and professional leadership within the post and take part in management activities and governance processes related to the post or the wider service within which it is embedded.

To provide medical leadership (alongside an existing full time and part time Consultants) to the SCFT, and to ensure the delivery of high-quality care to patients being discharged from secure care.

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Listed on the Specialist Register of the GMC Medical Register or eligible to register within six months.
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrist or equivalent qualifications/ certification
  • To be "approved" under Section 12 (2) of the 1983 Mental Health Act, the 2007 amendments and any successor legislation.
  • Approved Clinician status in terms of the same legislation
  • Experience of assessing and treating patients in acute and community psychiatric settings.
  • Membership of a professional indemnity organization.
  • Engagement with annual appraisal.
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary teaching.
  • Ability to take a leadership role in a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high quality care and staff morale.
  • Capacity to respond positively to the changing nature of an acute inpatient setting.
  • Excellent communication skills in verbal and written media.
