Exciting opportunities have risen for forward thinking and motivated mental health and learning disability nurses who wish to progress their career to work as deputy ward managers within the inpatient specialist service, part of Barnet Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust based at Chase-Farm Hospital, in Enfield. The post holders will work closely with and deputise for the ward managers in their absence. Be an active, members of the multi disciplinary team, supervise, teach and instruct junior staff (Nursing Assistant/Activity Co-ordinators/STR Workers) in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care.

Strong clinical skills for example an awareness of the mental Health Act and mental capacity act, ability to teach and to lead are essential in the role of deputy ward manager.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will work closely with the ward manager in day to day operational activities, such as staff supervision, completing and updating the E-roster & safe care life systems , managing and resolving conflict etc.
  • To participate as an effective member of the MDT and be responsible for the development and implementation of a patient centred approach to care: assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating the care needs of patients and their carers.
  • Liaise with other agencies, such prisons, police, and other hospitals in order to ensure service users receive the care they need without unnecessary delay.
  • To meet the physical, psychological, social and cultural needs of the individual and their family, using research-based knowledge and skills to maintain the individual's identity.
  • To ensure that measurable high standards of nursing care are maintained and participate in the setting and review of standards and nursing audits and in supporting staff in delivering and achieving high standards of nursing care.
  • Act as the most senior nurse on duty, having an oversight over the 12 wards, ensuring patient and staff safety, respond to emergencies and support and guide staff on clinical issues.
  • The post holder will have a strong awareness of confidentiality and information sharing guidelines at all times.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

MAIN NURSING DUTIES:

  • To participate as an effective member of the MDT and be responsible for the development and implementation of a patient centred approach to care: assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating the care needs of patients and their carers.
  • To ensure that statutory and legal requirements of care are incorporated safely within each patients programme of care.
  • To observe the requirements of the Mental Health Act 1983 ensuring the patient is fully informed of their legal position and their rights under the Act.
  • To interpret the significance of clinical observations, act upon them; and communicate information to other multi-disciplinary team members after making the necessary clinical judgements and in line with clinical protocols.
  • To determine nursing priorities and plan patient care accordingly including full risk assessment, inform the Ward manager when changes in circumstances may affect standards of care.

Have a thorough knowledge of medication used in the treatment of mental health and to provide information regarding medication, treatment, dosage and side effects to patients, relatives and carers. Use all available resources to assist in this.
  • To act as an Advocate for patients, representing their views in ward rounds, handover, tribunals etc.
  • To supervise junior staff and students on placement and ensure placement and learning objectives are met.
  • To carry out duties of the named nurse in co-ordinating care of specified service users.

  • To be aware of and practise professional accountability with due regard to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
