The post offered is that of Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Adult Psychiatry (10PA), working in the Barnet West Older Adults Community Mental Health Team. In addition, the post holder will work within the Barnet Memory Service and will have an active role in supporting the service and its ongoing MSNAP accreditation. The post is subject to the annual job planning process agreed under the New Consultant Contract.

Main duties of the job

The post offered is that of Consultant Psychiatrist in Barnet West Older Adults Community Mental Health Team, working in both the community mental health team and the memory clinic. In addition to this post, three additional CMHTs make up the older adult community service for the borough.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Consultant will provide leadership and supervision for a multidisciplinary community mental health team (CMHT) for older people and will work closely with Barnet Memory Service (BMS), providing clinical input to that service.

  • The Consultant will have responsibility for the diagnostic assessment and treatment of older adult psychiatric patients from the designated catchment area referred to and accepted by the service. Outpatient clinics and domiciliary visits in the community will constitute the majority of the direct clinical care provided by the Consultant. There will be a one day a week commitment to the Barnet Memory Service, where appropriate this can be delegated to trainees under the supervision of the Consultant.

  • A small minority of patients requiring inpatient admission will be admitted to The Oaks Ward, Chase Farm Hospital site, the acute admission ward, for older people with functional disorders resident in the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. Dr Kate Doukova has responsibility for this Ward. Similarly, patients with dementia requiring in-patient admission are admitted to Silver Birches, Chase Farm Hospital Site. Dr Lauren Huzzey has responsibility for this Ward. Cornwall Villa, Chase Farm Hospital has step-down beds and is under the care of Dr Ioana Popescu. Close liaison with the inpatient units will be provided in order to assist with the active management of the in-patient experience for older people and to minimise delayed discharge.

Ken Porter Ward is a continuing care and rehabilitation facility at The Springwell Centre. Dr Robert Tobiansky and Dr Saeed Alam are the Responsible Consultants for the ward.
