If so, a fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner - CAMHS to work within the Barnet CAMHS SCAN team based at the Holly Oak Clinic, Edgware Community Hospital.

Main duties of the job

To provide a systemic provision of care within Barnet CAMHS Neurodevelopmental Pathway and SCAN CAMHS team for children / young people and their families. Working with families using specialist Positive Behavioural Support Plans where appropriate.

A Community based post working alongside the ND, SCAN and Generic CAMHS to provide some outreach to Children / young people and their families.

To establish good working relationships with GPs, Paediatricians, Children's Services, Special Schools and Voluntary Sector Services.

The post holder will directly contribute to the positive working environment within the multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will require a high degree of professional autonomy and self-management, and will be required to account for their professional practice through appraisal and audit.

About us

SCAN are a multidisciplinary team (consisting of Psychiatry, Clinical Psychology, Child Psychotherapy, Family Therapy, Counselling Psychology, Nursing) providing a full CAMHS provision to children and adolescents with moderate to severe neurodevelopmental difficulties and comorbid mental health problems. Referrals are accepted when mental health problems are identified in accordance with the CAMHS referral criteria and when the child or adolescent attends one of the special schools in Barnet. Under particular circumstances referrals are also accepted from special educational units within mainstream education. SCAN clients have chronic and life-long difficulties and will often be re-referred through-childhood, or they require long term monitoring of medication, as their difficulties are generally linked to their disabilities. The majority of clients receive a general initial assessment, although some may require complex specialist diagnostic assessments involving several clinicians and other services (such as a Paediatrician, for example). A range of short or long term treatments are offered as would be expected from a multidisciplinary team. However, all assessment and treatment work is increased in complexity due to the comorbid neurodevelopmental difficulties and mental health problems, requiring more resources to assess, diagnose, treat and liaise with the many professionals involved with the client and their family.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

  1. Provide comprehensive assessments of children and young people referred to the team
  2. Formulate and implement plans for the treatment and/or management of the child/young persons problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings
  3. Be responsible for implementing a range of interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis
  4. Be responsible for the creation and implementation of PBS plans with CYP and their families.
  5. Evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group
  6. To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of children and young people whose problems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans
  7. Provide specialist PBS advice guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to children and young people formulation, diagnosis and treatment pla
  8. Liaising with Special Schools and other educational establishments
  9. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual children and young people and to provide advice to other professions on risk assessment and risk management
  10. Act as care coordinator, where appropriate, taking responsibility for initiating planning and review of CAMHS care plans including children and young people, their carers, referring agents and others involved the network of care.
  11. Attending CPA meetings, where applicable, and school meetings to participate in the Care Programme Approach and take care coordination responsibility and ensure that relevant CPA documentation is in place.
  12. Participate in transition process to Adult Mental Health Services
  13. Medication monitoring. Medication clinics to provide information to parents and young people. Working alongside the Consultant psychiatrist.
  14. Communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of children and young people under their care and to monitor progress during the course of both uni and multi-disciplinary care.
  15. To assist with the management of the behaviour of adolescents who at times may be physically and verbally aggressive towards other members of the family and staff.
  16. To participate on the local duty rota providing a more urgent response to issues when required.
  17. This may also include working as part of an evening clinic.
  18. To champion the SEND Agenda within Barnet CAMHS.
