Job summary

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS FOR INTERNAL CANDIDATES ONLY - ONLY OPEN TO THE ROYAL ORTHOPAEDIC HOSPITAL NHS FOUNDATION TRUST (ROH) EMPLOYEES.

Working in all areas of the hospital, cleaning to a high standard inline with the national cleaning standards, the successful applicant would be required to work off site locally situated and would be required to work unsociable hours and weekends. Cleaning in all areas of the Hospital where required and completing all high and low level cleaning, replenishing stock, machine cleaning floors and cleaning sanitary areas

Main duties of the job

To support and deliver a full Patient Environment cleaning service. Delivering an enhanced patient experience and support the Trust in providing a cohesive, cost effective, efficient and fully compliant Environmental Cleanliness service. To maintain the standards set out in the National Clearing Standards and improving compliance with the Patient Led Assessments of the Care Environment. To be able to work on your own initiative with the support and guidance of the Housekeeper Coordinators.

Job responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure a clean environment for patient care in accordance with Trust Local policies, health and safety requirements, NHS National Specification of Cleaning Standards, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), and Patient Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE), audits.
  • Adhere to Infection Prevention & Control principles specifically Hand Hygiene and Bare below the Elbow.
  • Adhere to the Trust`s Uniform Appearance Code/ Policy at all times maintaining a high standard of appearance and personal hygiene at all times.
  • Duties include, but are not limited to: vacuum cleaning; damp mopping of floors; damp dusting of furniture/fittings; cleaning of mirrors and internal glass; sanitary ware for example, baths, showers, sinks, toilets, washing of tiled surfaces and paintwork; high dusting of walls and ceilings (To shoulder height) High level cleaning, above shoulder height to be undertaken by Housekeeping enhanced clean team. Floor maintenance; changing of all curtains; Provide focused cleaning practices (Hydrochloride based products and solutions) when presented with an infected area (Barrier rooms and Bays) Assist the enhanced clean team with deep clean/terminal cleans when necessary (in-patient areas). During outbreaks of infections i.e. diarrhoea and vomiting, Clostridium Difficile, Norovirus etc.
  • Assist Clinical Professionals with the removal of Body fluids.
  • Take down and re-hang curtains as per your locations Frequency curtain change schedule including/following a Terminal and Isolation location Environmental clean or as directed by the line supervisor and in conjunction with the Ward Manager and the Infection Prevention and Control Nurse.
  • Assist when required full legionella flushing of all outlets within your area of responsibility and update records or documentation as required. Where access to an outlet is restricted resulting in an inability to flush, this must be reported to a supervisor/team leader as per instruction.
  • Safely empty and clean all commercial waste bins, secure and transport waste safely to the designated waste disposal area.
  • Decant clinical waste bins if called upon to assist patient flow activity.
  • Perform cleaning tasks in accordance with location cleaning schedule. (Ensuring schedules are displayed within your area of responsibility.
  • Perform focused cleaning tasks when instructed by a Housekeeping Coordinator.
  • Correctly and safely use equipment as necessary to provide the service, for example: suction cleaners (including vacuums; floor maintenance equipment; mopping systems (wet and dry); carpet cleaning machinery; steam cleaners.
  • Ensure all equipment used in delivery of duties is cleaned regularly and maintained in a safe manner, in compliance with COSHH.

  • Assist in ensuring cleaning stock is controlled and supplied to a level that meets the location.
  • Adhere to the national colour coding system for any work undertaken in accordance with current NHS national standards and Trust policies.
  • Report any defects, repairs required to furniture and equipment/fabric of building etc. to the Housekeeping Coordinator, and monitor response.
  • Preparation of patients crockery, and wrap cutlery ensuring they are ready for service.
  • To assist with the collection of patients mealtime wares, and wash patients beverage crockery, cutlery and serving utensils that remain at ward level. Including the collection, cleaning, sterilising and re-distribution of all water jugs.
  • Where appropriate ensure the building or work area is secure on leaving, for example: windows; doors; and exits are secure as appropriate.
  • Reports incidents via the Trust electronic incident reporting system or escalate to Supervisor or Line Manager.
  • Attend all local and mandatory training within the Trust. I.e. Manual Handling, Fire, Health and Safety, Infection Control, and Environmental Cleanliness.
  • Assist with training of staff involved with environmental cleanliness services into routines to achieve required standards.
  • To perform any reasonable request as indicated by the line supervisor/facilities senior management.

Physical effort and working conditions

  • Handling of potentially infectious blood and body fluids, with unpleasant smells/odours
  • Work with a variety of COSHH controlled substances
  • Significant manual handling activities requiring moderate/intense physical effort for short period of time, including bending and lifting.
