Job summary

Our Trust is pleased to be in a position to recruit a Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician (PTPT) to commence a fixed two year apprenticeship programme, within our Pharmacy department. This position will work alongside our trained staff and other trainees within the department.

To be eligible to apply for the Pre-registration Pharmacy Technician, you will need 4 GCSE's at grade C/4 or above including Maths, English and Science (or a combined science award with one qualification at C/4 or above plus another GCSE). Maths and English Functional skills levels 2 can also be accepted. It is essential that you provide evidence of the essential qualifications prior to interview.

We have up to 4 posts available.

3 x Single Sector - based at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital

1 x Cross Sector - based at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital with rotations to University Hospitals Birmingham and Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health Trust.

Start dates for successful applicants will be offered between September 2024 and March 2025.

This is a two year fixed term apprenticeship which includes working in the Hospital Pharmacy and day release at college leading to a Level 3 qualification. (Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians). This is a nationally recognised qualification, which on completion will allow you to register as a Pharmacy Technician with The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Available colleges are Birmingham Metropolitan College or Walsall College.

Main duties of the job

This is a rewarding and challenging role that enables you to earn, while being on a formal training programme leading to professional registration. You will be studying as an apprentice which will include practical on the job training alongside successful completion of in-house competency packages and a formal training programme that will enable eligibility for registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)

While learning the practical skills that Pharmacy Technicians require you will also undertake and complete the Pre-registration Pharmacy Technician qualification commencing in September 2024, you will be released for one day per week to attend college.

You will need to be self-motivated, organised, able to work efficiently to deadlines and be able to work under pressure at times. You will be expected to work through the department on a rotational basis as set out in the two-year timetable.

Please note, this is a full time 2-year fixed term contract with no guarantee of a qualified Pharmacy Technician post at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

The successful candidate must have good organisational and interpersonal skills, be a team player, able to work individually whilst knowing their own limitations, who is comfortable working within a small department and able to demonstrate that they are committed to a career in Pharmacy. The 2 year post will involve rotating into Dispensary, Stores & Procurement and Ward based working.

At the end of the 2 year contract the student will be expected to have attained:Pharmacy Technician (integrated) Level: 3 (Standard) Apprenticeship

The successful candidate must have good time management skills both in and out of work due to the pressure of undertaking the qualification, and being in full time employment. A learning contract must be adhered to at all times. This post requires participation in the late night and weekend rota.

Please be aware that for an apprenticeship role, the salary adheres to the NHS Agenda for Change Annex 21. Salaries for apprenticeship positions are paid at a percentage of the corresponding Agenda for Change Band. As a Band 4 role, the typical salary payment is 70% in the first year and 75% in the second year. However as these percentages would fall below the Minimum/National Living Wage(s), the role will offer an annual salary of £22,383, in line with Agenda for Change Band 2. This amount is subject to change with the new pay scales for 2024-25 and potential increases in subsequent year.
