Job summary
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS foundation trust is located in Birmingham and is an independent foundation trust providing high quality, multidisciplinary perioperative care for patients undergoing Orthopaedic, Spinal (including complex spine) and oncological surgery for musculoskeletal tumours. The Trust is a tertiary referral center for both musculo-skeletal oncology and spinal surgery and a significant experience in both areas is desirable.
Applications are invited for highly motivated individuals to join our department. We have 22 full time equivalent consultants, 6 SAS doctors, 3 Anaesthetic Associates and 2 to 4 rotating registrars from the Birmingham school and further afield seeking advanced orthopaedic experience. This post is a whole-time consultant role (10 PA's). Should the successful candidates wish to work 11 programed activities, suitable adjustments can be made to the service provision timetable. On-call commitment equate to 1:8 which involves covering theatres and critical care services.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be expected to complement and expand the existing services within the department. A particular emphasis will be placed upon critical care outreach, acute pain and pre-operative assessment. You will be expected to contribute to audit, teaching and research within the department and adequate time for these activities are included within the job plan. Applicants should hold FRCA or equivalent and be on the GMC Specialist Register with Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Consideration will be given to suitable applicants within six months of CCT, provided arrangements can be made with the respective Deanery.

On-call commitments equate to 1:8 and involves covering theatre and critical care services (level 2 only) and attracts a 0.5PA addition to the weekly clinical job plan. This job plan will include 2.5 SPA with an anticipation that the successful applicants will contribute significantly to the quality and standard improvement in the department.
Within our department are 6 substantive specialty doctor anaesthetists, who cover first on call duties with the registrars. There are also 3 Anaesthetic Associates (AA) working in our department. They work under the supervision of a consultant anaesthetist in line with RCOA recommendations in a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. Twin theatre working is embedded in our rota. We are also training 4 student AAs.
The Anaesthetic Department provides anaesthesia services for all orthopaedic surgical procedures being carried out in the hospital including interventional radiology. We currently also have consultants contributing to pre-assessment, HDU, acute and chronic pain and perioperative medicine. We are also in the process of developing an acute pain service to complement the critical care outreach service already in place.
