Following the expansion of our Operational Team, an exciting opportunity is available in a senior role that will have a direct impact on patient experience and outcomes. We are recruiting a Deputy Chief Operating Officer.

The role of Deputy Chief Operating Officer is an important one. The successful candidate will be a leader at an incredibly important time, both nationally for the NHS following the impact of the pandemic, and for The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital as we look to respond to the needs of the communities in our Integrated Care System.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Chief Operating Officer will help maintain excellent standards of care while driving collaboration. The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is leading the transformation of musculoskeletal services, both regionally for the Integrated Care System, and nationally as a partner in the National Orthopaedic Alliance. You will play a significant role in partnership development and planning. You will lead a Mutual Aid Programme and get involved with key operational work-streams. This is a significant role that will provide exposure to system-wide strategy and planning.

The post holder will provide strong strategic and operational leadership and direction to ensure effective and efficient delivery of Trust services. The post holder will be responsible for identifying and mitigating areas of risk and will play a key role in the development of the operational elements of the Trusts performance management tools, which will be used to support the delivery of the integrated dashboard. They will ensure that appropriate performance data is readily available to the Trust Board for managing the Trusts agenda and for performance / contractual meetings with the ICB or any other appropriate body.

The post holder will deputise for the Chief Operating Officer, taking a lead role in representing the Trust on internal and external meetings and project groups. They will play a key role in supporting the Chief Operating Officer in leading the transformational change and redesign of orthopaedic and MSK services across the System.

The post holder will participate in the Executive on call rota, taking overall responsibility for the site out of hours up to major incident status.

The post holder will be an integral member of the Chief Operating Officers team, supporting the implementation of service delivery and development plans, together with plans for wider system change and assisting in the business planning process.

The post holder will support the COO in developing a culture that fosters partnership working , staff engagement and multi professional care delivery. They will be an expert advisor on areas of operational performance, including efficiency, finance, workforce and patient safety and engagement.

The post holder will lead on the day to day operation of the Trust, ensuring cohesive working and optimising performance within the established governance framework of the organisation. To ensure consistently high-quality patient care through the development of a culture of effective teamwork and patient focus, and through the empowerment of medical and nursing colleagues, service managers, matrons, specialist nurses and other professionals. They will work closely with the wider Executive/Non Executive Team, to ensure a Trust wide approach to issues as required. They will be required to take autonomous decisions in areas which affect the operational working of the Trust and in their improvement.
