Assistant Cardiac Physiologist

Job summary

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated individual to join our multi-disciplinary team.

You will be responsible for providing a range of diagnostic tests for patients and a range of clinical duties under the guidance of a Cardiac Physiologist, Consultants and Specialist Nurses.

Our Assistants work independently performing a number of clinical duties/tasks following training and meeting competency within role as per policy and procedure.

Our Assistants will be expected to work across all the WWL sites, RAEI, Leigh Infirmary, Thomas Linacre Centre and Wrightington.

You will be initially appointed on a Band 3 two-year progression to Assistant Cardiac Physiologist, Band 4 is conditional on successful completion of: a two-day training course, the Respiratory Certificate and log book, and the SCST certificate. On verification of these qualifications the banding change will take effect from the date confirmed in writing by the Trust. If the required training and certification are not successfully completed within the two-year period (or any agreed extension), you may be redeployed to a suitable Band 3 post in line with Trust policy.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for providing a range of diagnostic tests for patients and a range of clinical duties under the guidance of a Cardiac Physiologist.

Our Assistant will be expected to work across all of the WWL sites, RAEI, Leigh Infirmary, Thomas Linacre Centre and Wrightington

Duties include:

Assist in Specialist led and physiologists rapid access chest pain clinics

Assist in preparation for echocardiograms

Application and removal of ambulatory monitors

Perform basic lung function diagnostics

Perform and report electrocardiograms

Assist in TOE sterilisation / decontamination

Perform other duties as required

Train support workers to perform ECG

To assist members of the medical staff with any queries.

To provide cover when necessary

To provide clerical support to the Admin Team

To provide any other duties that may be required relevant to this grade.

The Assistant cardiac Physiologist will workboth independently and working as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • As an Assistant Cardiac Physiologist, you make a valuable and important contribution to the delivery of high-quality healthcare in the Trust. Your role is to support the registered professional in the delivery of safe, effective, compassionate care to patients and their relatives.
  • Working under the direction of a cardiac Physiologist, you will participate in the clinical care provided to patients prioritising workload appropriately and developing competencies that safeguard practice and effectiveness in role
  • Have proficient attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS and Trust Values
  • Work as part of a designated multi-disciplinary team, delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the individual

  • At the request of the Registered Health Care Professional, perform and record physiological measurements on patients, and report any abnormalities to the supervising Cardiac Physiologist
  • Obtaining MRSA swabs
  • To assist in blood collection.
  • Assist the Registered Health Care Professional in maintaining a clean environment
  • Following the completion of appropriate training and assessment and under the direction of a registered health care professional undertake clinical activities such as ECG recordings / Spirometry
  • Provide and receive sensitive information concerning a patients medical condition.
  • Act in accordance with all organisational policies and procedures and within expected values and behaviours.
  • Actively participate in and attend departmental MDT meetings.
  • Demonstrate good understanding of principles of consent and ensure valid consent is obtained prior to undertaking diagnostic procedures / duties
  • Demonstrate good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act / Deprivation of Liberties and applies principles to everyday practice seeking advice / guidance from the registered healthcare professional as required
