Job summary

The Deputy Breast Imaging Lead Radiographer will support the Breast Imaging Lead Radiographer to deliver and develop a quality and effective breast imaging service at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will work clinically when staffing levels require, performing mammograms in both the screening and symptomatic setting, at static sites and on the mobile screening vans within the catchment area of the South Lancashire Breast Screening Programme.

The post holder will be managerially responsible for leading teams of Mammography Helpers, Assistant Practitioners, Radiographers and Advanced Practitioners.

Evidence of qualifications will be requested during interview and compliance checks.

Main duties of the job

  • To support the Breast Imaging Lead Radiographer/Breast Operational Manager to deliver and develop a quality and effective breast imaging service.
  • To be responsible for the provision of a highly specialised technical service, which undertakes all aspects of mammography and breast ultrasound examinations in the department and on mobile units at other sites.
  • To provide professional leadership, covering all aspects of management, clinical practice, student training and be involved in the long-term strategic planning of service delivery and developments.
  • To be managerially responsible for leading teams of Mammography Helpers, Assistant Practitioners, Radiographers and Advanced Practitioners.
  • To ensure that the breast imaging service operates within robust clinical governance and quality assurance guidelines.
  • To undertake regular audit of standards of imaging, in line with the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) QA process.
  • To ensure Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) are accurate and up to date.
  • To work clinically when staffing levels require and provide an expert clinical advice on all aspects of breast imaging, to all users and employees of the service, and ensure a timely delivery of service for all aspects of breast imaging.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To provide an efficient and effective breast imaging service for the Breast Unit within Wrightington Wigan and Leigh Foundation Trust, (W.W.L.) to recognised professional standards
  • To demonstrate leadership across the breast imaging departments of W.W.L. by:-
    • Utilising existing staffing across the department and mobile sites to ensure that all previously agreed Service Level Agreements are met.
    • To be responsible for all breast radiographic services at W.W.L.
  • The post holder will ensure that all external and internal policies and procedures pertinent to breast imaging will be actioned.
  • Ensure that an ongoing analysis of the breast imaging waiting lists is maintained and appropriately actioned across all sites to ensure local and national waiting targets are met.
  • Ensure all items of equipment pertinent to breast imaging are maintained and serviced according to manufacturers requirements.
  • To mentor and supervise student radiographers, trainee mammographers and trainee mammography associates.
  • Provide support to the Breast Imaging Lead Radiographer and Breast Operational manager to meet current service requirements and to provide vision and plan for future service developments.
  • To lead the departments audit, appraisal and assessment of image quality as part of the Quality Assurance programmes within the breast department through the NHSBSP QA process.
