Main duties of the job
The clinical role of the successful candidate will involve working with the community specialist palliative care team who are based at Wigan and Leigh Hospice and working with the hospital palliative care team based at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.
The hospital team moved into purpose build accommodation on the hospital site in June 2023 which includes dedicated clinic space. This has already enabled us to increase our outpatient activity, which we plan to develop further.
The proposed job plan includes consultant ward reviews with the hospital palliative care team with the potential to increase outpatient provision further, including rapid access clinics.
The community role will include joint clinical assessments with members of the MDT in the patients homes and the Woodview Centre at the hospice. The successful candidate will also be expected to work with the senior leadership team at the hospice and the end of life strategy group to develop community palliative and end of life services at a strategic level.
There are opportunities in both settings to have an education role, supporting medical students and doctors in training.
There is a degree of flexibility within the job plan; we will try to accommodate interests and preferences.

Clinical role
The successful candidate will join a well-established team with three senior medical colleagues who lead the specialist palliative care services within Wigan Borough. The clinical role of the successful candidate will involve sessions working within community and hospital settings, as illustrated by the job plan. The detail of these clinical sessions is flexible and subject to discussion with existing colleagues.
On call commitment: This is a maximum of 1 in 5 weekday evenings and weekends, the majority of these will be second on-call but may also include a small number of first on call. The doctor on call is expected to see complex patients at Wigan and Leigh Hospice as well as provide remote advice to the borough. Compensatory time off in lieu following busy on call can be considered.
Tier 2: In addition to the above on-call commitment we operate a Tier 2 rota providing face to face weekend review to hospital and community patients alongside a specialist nurse. Medical input is provided on one weekend day for 6 hours. You will be expected to participate in this rota on a 1:5 frequency. Where possible this will be timed to coincide with a second on-call. Remuneration can be financial or 8 hours time in lieu.
Hospital role: The post-holder will work with the multidisciplinary team reviewing Hospital inpatients. This will include attendance at the weekly MDT and may include attendance at other MDTs (e.g., cancer of unknown primary, non-malignant liver disease depending on areas of interest.
Outpatient sessions: Clinics may form part of the job-plan. There are well established clinics at both the hospice and hospital.
