The post will be across 3 sites, with outpatient and day case surgery provided on the Leigh site, inpatient and obstetric care on the Wigan site and the outpatient facility at the Thomas Linacre Centre, Wigan
Main duties of the job
All consultants will take part in a 1 in 11 rota of labour ward cover in which one week is devoted solely to labour ward and emergency gynaecology cover with all other duties cancelled in that week.
Antenatal clinics
General gynaecology and special interest clinics
The post holder is required to cover General gynaecology clinics. Menstrual disorder and adolescent gynae clinics are available to the post holder should they be able to demonstrate appropriate skills.
Theatre
The theatre allocations are currently being reviewed for all consultants depending on demand and requirements for access.
SPA Time
In addition to personal CPD, it is anticipated that the appointee will use SPA time to support the clinical governance frame work within the department as well as to develop skills complementary to the needs of the department with mentoring/support as necessary from an existing consultant.
On call rota
- All consultants are non-resident with a middle grade obstetrician on site supported by one junior doctor (Foundation year 2 or ST1/2) on a 1 in 10 rota.
- There will be prospective cover for out of hours duties and labour ward cover with a requirement to swap these duties with another consultant if they fall in weeks when holiday is planned.

Maternity Services
In 2021 there were 2534 deliveries. The maternity unit comprises a delivery suite and a maternity ward. The Delivery Suite has a dedicated theatre, with provision for postoperative care. ICU and HDU facilities are available. There are 9 delivery rooms including a pool room and a bereavement room with central monitoring of CTGs. In 2019, there were approximately 12,100 new gynaecological referrals.
The women's healthcare and day care units at Leigh Infirmary provide the following services:-
- Gynaecology clinics
- Direct access colposcopy service
- Outpatient hysteroscopy clinic, with access to Versapoint / TruClear and a comprehensive outpatient endometrial ablation service
- Bladder assessment clinics, urodynamic investigation service, outpatient cystoscopy, intravesical Botox and urethral bulking.
- Menopause clinic
- Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic
- Pre Conception Clinic
- Termination of pregnancy service.
- Fetal loss counselling service
- Fertility services are provided in the Hewitt Fertility Centre (Fertility Fusion) located at Wrightington Hospital.
