Job summary

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and self-motivated Speech & Language therapist who is currently a Band 6 or a Band 5 who is wanting to progress within a development post to Band 6.

This is a development post and you will be paid at 75% of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate which equates to £30,441 per annum pro rata.

There will be a competency framework drawn up by the clinical lead and you will work through this within an agreed timescale. On completion of the competencies you will continue as a Band 6 with a salary of £33,706 per annum pro rata.

You will join our dynamic and friendly in-patient team based at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan. The team covers all medical, surgical wards and the Critical Care Unit.

You will be supported and work alongside other Band 6 and Band 5 SLT 's and be supported by the acute team lead. The ideal candidate will be dysphagia competent and should have experience of managing complex dysphagia patients. Experience of videofluoroscopy and management of patients with tracheostomies is desirable but not essential as training can be given.

The post willoffer the opportunity to supervise more junior team members, be involved with student training and supervision, deliver training to the wider MDT and participate in service development.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high standard of speech & language therapy service to patients on the wards at RAEI.

To act as a source of knowledge on the management of acute medical conditions providing an advisory service to patients, relatives, speech & language therapists, medical staff and other healthcare professionals.

To take a role in the specialist assessment and treatment of patients within the speciality who may have complex and/or chronic presentation, and to determine clinical diagnosis and speech & language therapy treatment indicated and to maintain records as an autonomous practitioner.

To hold responsibility for own case load and be responsible for a defined area of the acute Speech & Language Therapy service. Supervision takes the form of regular formal training and clinical reasoning sessions, peer review, case conferences. Access to advice and support from a senior speech & language therapist is available if required, clinical work is routinely evaluated.

To assist the Team Leader and Therapy Lead in planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating the speech & language therapy service provided to the acute wards on a day-today basis.

The role would require you to work across all areas in the Trust which includes those that are designated as positive, asymptomatic and negative COVID wards.
