Job summary

This is a unique opportunity to be appointed to Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We are seeking a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest Soft Tissue Knee Surgery.

The post holder will be required to be on the Trauma and Orthopaedic On-call Rota at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan, and to provide elective services at Wrightington Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The duties and responsibilities set out in a Job Plan will include, as appropriate:

About us

The appointment will be on the basis of the new consultant contract laid down by the Hospital Medical and Dental Staff Terms and Conditions of Service, until such time those local arrangements have been reached and implemented by the Trust. Any subsequent changes will be notified to the successful candidate and thereafter form part of his/her contract of employment. The arrangement of duties will be such as may be agreed from time to time between the employing Trust and the person appointed.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Basic Medical Degree
  • Full registration with GMC and Licence to Practice
  • FRCS (Tr&Orth)
  • On the GMC specialist register or within six months of being admitted to the register if currently in a training programme within the UK, i.e. within six months of expected CCT date at the date of AAC

Desirable

  • Specialist qualifications (MSc/ MD / PhD) related to subspecialist interest

Experience

Essential

  • Completed at least 1 year of fellowship subspecialist training in soft tissue knee surgery
  • Experience in knee trauma surgery, including managing multi-ligament knee injuries.

Desirable

  • Experience in joint preservation surgery (eg osteochondral allograft, meniscus transplant & knee osteotomy)
  • Experience in managing early onset osteoarthritis of the knee (eg non-surgical, osteotomy, partial replacement)

Skills

Essential

  • To have demonstrated competencies though out a wide range of knee surgery including cruciate and collateral ligament reconstruction, meniscus repair surgery, osteotomies around the knee and patellofemoral surgery.
  • The ability to manage general orthopaedic trauma appropriate to a Trauma Unit.
  • Can demonstrate ability to lead and manage people
  • Demonstrates intelligent and analytical approach to problem solving
  • Proven organisational skills
  • Experience and interest in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Basic skills in clinical audit Appreciation of benefits of clinical audit in improving clinical practice and the development of clinical guidelines
