Job summary
We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a Junior Research Physician / Trust Doctor (Vaccine Trials)to join our team on a full-time 12-month fixed term contract based in Cheadle Community Hospital, Stoke on Trent, with expected travel across the Trust geography.
You will support the Vaccine Trial Principal Investigator (PI) by undertaking medical duties in line with the highest safety standards for trial participants and in compliance with Ethical and Good Clinical Practice principles and regulatory standards.
You will oversee the delivery of clinical trials in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI) and co-PIs and will be responsible for delivering day to day research - i.e. following the protocol, assessing suitability and obtaining consent for research, undertaking full medical assessments of clinical trial participants including full physical and neurological examinations, ECG interpretation, laboratory test interpretation. Responding to safety concerns regarding trial participants is a key function, so experience regarding the acute assessment of the unwell patient and ALS certification is essential.
Whilst the post is not formally approved for physician training from Core Medical Training (CMT) or Specialty Training (ST), it provides an opportunity for gaining experience in clinical trials and we would welcome applicants with a broad range of general medical experience including GIM, Infectious Diseases, General Practice and Emergency Medicine.
Main duties of the job
You will oversee the delivery of clinical trials in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI) and co-PIs ensuring that the approved protocol is followed at all times.
As part of this role you will be expected to:
- Identify patients suitable for entry into clinical trials according to specific protocols and guidelines. This may include liaising with health and social care professionals, reviewing medical notes and inclusion/exclusion criteria.
- Liaise with participants and clinical staff to provide them with an understanding of clinical research practice ensuring ethical codes of practice are followed at all times.
- Ensure participants are provided with written information relevant to the research study and are given the opportunity to discuss the clinical trial adequately at the outset and during the course of the research or clinical trial in which they are being asked to participate (i.e. informed consent).
- Coordinate treatment, assessment and follow-up as necessary in accordance with research protocol.
- Observe patients and monitor treatment toxicity/side effects; escalating findings accordingly.
- Participate in the Quality Assurance process relating to the implementation and recording of clinical trial activities and contribute to the implementation of recommendations for corrective and preventative actions
