Job summary
A position has become available for a third year Trainee Counselling Psychologist on a fixed term basis for 9 months. The placement will be available in our BeeU (CAMHS) service, providing psychological interventions to young people (aged 0-25) and their families in Telford, Shropshire, and Wrekin.
This is a perfect opportunity for a third-year trainee to gain experience in working systemically with families and other professionals as well as working directly with children and families.
BeeU is a busy service providing support to children and families experiencing; mental health difficulties, eating disorders, learning disabilities, autism spectrum conditions, ADHD, young people in crisis and support for child aged between 0-5.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the placement, under the supervision of a more senior psychologist, will be to provide:
- Direct therapeutic interventions to children and their families, including individual and group work.
- Indirect therapeutic interventions to children and their families, which may include functional analysis and observations.
- To complete assessments, including cognitive assessments (where appropriate) for children.
- To develop formulations and share for often complex presentation using at least two different psychological models.
- To liaise with both internal and external agencies where appropriate
- To develop and facilitate training for non-psychology colleagues where appropriate.
- To access appropriate supervision on a regular basis, as outlined by university and BPS competencies for a trainee counselling psychologist

As a trainee counselling psychologist, all clinical areas of responsibility will be under the supervision of a HCPC Registered Psychologist. As a placement as part of a Doctoral Programme the following duties will be in accordance to the learning outcomes and competencies of the training programme.
To develop skills in providing specialist psychological assessments, formulation and appropriate interventions for children and young people in the BeeU service, with a focus on providing mental health difficulties who sit within the core mental health service. This may involve direct therapeutic work or a systemic focus or support to children and young people, their families and other professionals involved in their lives.
There may be times where interventions to children, families and professionals are required to be provided across the service.
To complete assessments with children, young people and their families. This may include conducting functional analysis of a young persons presentation or neurological assessments.
To effectively write reports and letters to young people, their families and other health care professionals.
To develop skills in formulations using appropriate model(s) of psychological understanding of an individuals need. Communicating this formulation effectively to young people, their families and other professionals involved in their care.
To undertake and develop skills in risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions, on psychological aspects of risk assessment, including the risk of self-harm, and risk management.
To evaluate and consider treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models. To explore these treatment options in supervision.
To manage and access supervision in accordance with university and trust guidance.
To co-facilitate group therapy programmes.
To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients under their care and to monitor progress during the course of their treatment within the service.
To administer and interpret appropriate outcomes measures.
To communicate complex information in a skilled and sensitive manner in situations with patients who may be extremely hostile or highly emotional requiring the highest level of communication skills.
