Job summary

This is a full time substantive Consultant Psychiatrist post in Forensic Psychiatry based at the Hatherton Centre, St George's Hospital in Stafford. This post is a newly created position in response to a reconfiguration of services across the directorate.

The Forensic Psychiatry Directorate provides inpatient psychiatric care for mentally disordered offenders from Staffordshire, Wolverhampton and Shropshire.

The Trust's Inclusion Directorate provides multi-disciplinary mental health and substance misuse in-reach services to a large number of prisons both within the West Midlands and also nationally.

The Forensic Directorate also provides services in partnership with probation as part of various Offender Personality Disorder Pathway projects.

Main duties of the job

The Hatherton Centre provides Secure Mental Health care for men aged over 18 with a primary diagnosis of mental illness. Working as part of a multi -disciplinary team you will provide active involvement in the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of service user care responding quickly to those referred with urgent and high risk mental health needs and provide collaborative, effective, evidence based interventions at the right time with the right person You will need to have the following key skills and experience:

  • Experience of working in a mental health setting
  • Experience of working with mentally disordered offenders
  • Expertise in the assessment and treatment of mentally disordered offenders and risk management
  • Experience of working in teams and with multiple agencies and stakeholders
  • Expertise in the management of acute and chronic mental illness and rehabilitation of offenders.
  • Ability to effectively lead a team
  • Experience of service development and quality improvement
  • CCT in Forensic or General Adult psychiatry

Essential

  • CCT in Forensic Psychiatry or equivalent training as approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists (senior trainees in forensic psychiatry must be within six months of CCT at the point of interview)
  • Full GMC registration plus eligibility for specialist registration

Clinical and professional competence

Essential

  • A high level of expertise in risk assessment and management
  • Ability to manage own time and to prioritise clinical workload
  • A high level of expertise in forensic psychiatry
