Job summary

We are looking to appoint a Rehabilitation Medicine Consultant to join the specialist rehabilitation team in Stoke-on-Trent, working across the region's major trauma centre at Royal Stoke University Hospital and the well-established Rehabilitation Medicine department at the Haywood Hospital. This post offers an exciting mix of trauma rehabilitation with neurological, hyper-acute and amputee rehabilitation. There is flexibility and support for you to tailor this post to your individual interests, as well as develop leadership roles and academic career progression. This post is part replacement and part succession planning for the department. You join a broad multi-disciplinary team and enjoy many benefits of cross-specialty working, as well as working within dynamic trauma and specialist regional rehabilitation clinical networks.

This full-time role offers a mix of inpatient, in-reach and outpatient activity, with scope to negotiate part-time working or job sharing if preferred. We are able to offer relocation and incentive packages. We are a friendly team with a broad range of activities, covering a total population of 2.5 million across a diverse geographical area that includes Staffordshire, Shropshire, parts of Cheshire and North Wales.

Main duties of the job

The Rehabilitation Medicine service provides inpatient specialist rehabilitation units on two sites. The successful applicant will work in our hyper-acute specialist rehabilitation ward, ARTU at Royal Stoke University Hospital (RSUH) sharing named consultant responsibility with a consultant colleague for care of ten inpatients with Category A needs. A full multidisciplinary team and advanced nurse practitioners are dedicated to this service. The role includes outreach to the specialty wards across Royal Stoke University Hospital, including critical care and assessment of referred inpatients, supported by AHP coordinators.

In addition to our 10 commissioned hyper-acute beds, we have 20 beds on Broadfield Unit, BU, at the nearby Haywood Hospital. The two units form the ARTU-BU pathway, with over-arching clinical leadership and strong working relationships between teams, many staff holding joint appointments across the two host Trusts (MPFT and UHNM). The Haywood hospital also houses the limb fitting service for the region and this post involves the opportunity to support the existing lead consultant in amputee rehabilitation. Outpatient clinics are coordinated from the Haywood site and include the well-established spasticity service, which has brought international recognition to the Stoke-on-Trent team.
